Ex moved out of Germany but still registered at my address + insurance/tax letters keep coming, what to do?
Hello,
I’m in a bit of a messy situation and would appreciate some real experiences or advice from people familiar with German bureaucracy.
My ex lived with me in Germany and was registered (Anmeldung) at my flat. We broke up in December and he moved out of the country shortly after. He initially said he might come back because he was trying to find a job to keep his Blue Card, so he stayed in the system and didn’t deregister.
We are no longer in contact at all.
Now it’s May, and he has basically given up on staying in Germany. He’s not working here anymore and is living abroad, but he is still registered at my address.
The problem is:
- I keep receiving his letters (Finanzamt, health insurance, etc.)
- especially statutory health insurance is still billing him
- I’m getting more and more administrative mail addressed to him
- it’s starting to feel like I’m stuck in the middle of his bureaucracy
I obviously don’t want to get into trouble or have issues with my own address / Neben costs / Rundfunkbeitrag / etc.
My questions:
- Am I at risk of anything if he stays registered at my address for now?
- Can I just report to the Bürgeramt that he moved out / is unknown moved?
- Is it normal in Germany that someone else ends up dealing with this when a person leaves the country?
- If I report it, does it actually get him deregistered or do they still need him to confirm it?
Also: would it make sense to give his foreign address to Finanzamt/insurance, or is that pointless without him doing it himself?
I’d really appreciate hearing how this usually plays out in practice in Germany.
Thanks in advance.
