Cat having GI side effects from Amoxicillin/Clavulanate after dental surgery – day 3, should I be concerned?
My cat Ray had a pretty major dental extraction 4 days ago (3 teeth + 2 roots removed, plus a full cleaning). The vet prescribed Amoxicillin/Clavulanate (100mg + 25mg) every 12 hours for 7 days, He weighs 14.3 lbs.
We’re now on day 3 and he’s showing significant GI distress. Yesterday evening after his dose he started drinking excessively (which he does when he’s very nauseous), and this morning after eating he received his tablet and completely stopped eating. He’s now sleeping, lethargic, and hasn’t eaten since.
He has been on 5mg prednisolone daily for the past 3 days due to his pre-existing enteropathy.
Would 3 days of antibiotics potentially be sufficient coverage for a post-dental procedure, or is stopping early risky?
I’m planning to call the vet today regardless, just looking for some insight before I do. Thanks in advance
