What would you do?
My 9yo hound has been having GI issues for about 6 or 7 months. We've been to the vet multiple times over this period and tons of testing.
They've found things of course being that he is older but they cannot guarantee that these other things are causing his GI issues.
I went back the other day and they gave me acid reflux meds and said try this. But we have tried this in the past with no results. Ive been to 3 vets and they dont know what is truly causing this issue and have tried a multitude of meds and foods to help. But the issue hasn't been alleviated at all.
The big thing that was found was an enlarged thyroid which he is scheduled for surgery. I asked if this could be the issue with his GI and tenesmus and they were like maybe not sure.
My poor guy for some time has been having issues going to defecat. He is pushing for long periods and straining with little production and at times he is screaming out. He is always trying when we go for walks or he is outside. His back has started to hunch because of the pushing and pain. He has been on pain meds for sometime and they arent helping. Ive tried so many things but nothing seemed to help and its getting worse. I hate to see him in pain and scared.
I cant seem to find much if the thyroid can cause issues of this significance. If it will help there is no question but I would hate to put him through that and he is continuing to have all this pain.
Also he wont settle alot because of the pain and he paces. His tail is down alot of the time and this is newer he used to wag all the time but he barely does anymore.
I attached a video of how he is and this is from a month or 2 back so it has gotten so much worse.
If this was your dog what would you do? Try the surgery and hope for the best or not let him endure any more pain?
Please help a distressed dog mom.
Edit: Also since December he has lost almost 10lbs.
