Lee Everett is the definition of a great parent, and here is why.
Lee is an incredible parent. Even though he was forced into this role by circumstance, and his dream of having his own family never shifted into reality due to unfortunate events (and I’m not even talking about the apocalypse here), the way he raises his "adoptive" child, Clementine, proves he was truly ready for parenthood. In short, he built a perfect model of interaction, fostering a healthy relationship and encouraging healthy separation.
One of Lee's greatest strengths was his ability to create a "safe zone" for Clementine. He minimized harsh or over-the-top reactions to her words or actions, even when they were dangerous or naive. This allowed Clem to feel secure enough to express her thoughts and ideas openly. Because she felt safe around him, she was able to be honest and proactive rather than retreating into herself.
Furthermore, Lee was remarkably patient. He explained things she didn't understand or misinterpreted, finding the right words without imposing his own opinion as absolute. He gave her enough space to process information, allowing her to build her own values based on his experience—values she would later rely on to make her own decisions in a world gone mad.
A common parenting mistake is disregarding a child's opinion, which leads to them becoming passive or losing their initiative. Lee avoided this by actively asking for Clem’s input and letting her make real decisions. He didn't suppress her; he accepted and guided her. By praising and thanking her, he reinforced her sense of worth, making her realize that she was important and needed. This was the foundation of her self-confidence.
Perhaps most importantly, Lee never manipulated her. He never guilt-tripped or shamed her, even when her mistakes led to irreparable consequences in the game's finale. Even when she felt the crushing weight of her actions, Lee continued to comfort and soothe her. Through his example, he allowed her to learn that actions have consequences—sometimes heavy ones—and he let her live through this experience as a final lesson. It is a bittersweet irony, considering Lee was a professor by trade.
These actions helped Clementine develop a healthy relationship with herself and formed her identity and moral compass. It fostered healthy separation and independence. Despite all the physical and psychological trauma, she remained a resilient girl who kept her humanity, her dreams, and her sincerity—things so easily lost in their world—while staying strong enough to fight back. Lee was a wonderful parent, and there is a lot we can all learn from him.
