I stumbled on this subreddit roughly half a year ago and have absolutely torn through all of your recommendations on here – thanks for that! After lurking for so long I figured it was only fair I provide a tier list with tags of my favorites.

How I broke down the tiers:

S-Tier: These are the books that carved out a plot of land in my head and have built a comfy home with characters and worlds that will stay with me the rest of my life. I think they are worth reading even if the tags aren’t your normal cup of tea. Taste is subjective, so if you don’t like them that’s fine, but we can’t be friends because you don’t like my friends 😊

A-Tier: These I consider best in class of their respective subgenre and left me with a heavy book hangover, stumbling around sad after they were over.

B-Tier: Excellent examples of their subgenre and must reads if the tags align with your interest.

C-Tier: Didn’t stay with me after the last page, but solid entertaining writing from authors and series I will continue.

D, F, and DNF: Skipped these since writing is hard and I’d rather focus on recommending the books I did like rather than warning others away from books they might otherwise enjoy!

My personal taste: You’ll probably be able to tell from the list, but my preference is mono-romance with some element of role reversal, so if you taste lie elsewhere like harem fantasy or contemporary slice of life you can probably bump those up by a tier.

Always looking for more recs! Currently listening to Sin and Soil by Merchant and reading Bound Beloved by Miko Sage.

I’ve seen a couple different posts in this subreddit asking for Progression Fantasy with romance, followed by the inevitable comments that this subgenre does romance poorly. So I wanted to throw together a few Romance suggestions that I think PF fans might enjoy.

My criteria: romance focus, speculative fiction, fantasy or science fiction, and some element of MC progression even if it’s not the main focus.

His Orc Charioteer Bride by K.R. Treadway: Recently enslaved MC has to navigate a relationship he barely understands with an orc charioteer while learning how to survive a Roman-style chariot race. Fast-paced mono-romance with a badass love interest and a tough, resourceful MC.

Princess of the Void by Alex Reno/Dukerino: MC rescues, and is subsequently abducted by, an alien princess of a tyrannical galactic empire. Competent MC mono-romance in a fish-out-of-water plot where the progression is more about him learning to navigate his new world. Forced proximity and misunderstanding trope with great payoff and a slightly sinister but fun LI.

Great audiobook, but I found out afterward that Dukerino was one of the authors who ran into trouble with SLP, and I don’t believe he’s currently earning from audiobook sales unfortunately. I went ahead and subbed to his Patreon for a couple months to support since that doesn’t sit right with me.

Warlock by Daniel Kensington: Orphan finds out he’s a warlock Harry in this harem romance. Harem isn’t a genre known for its solid character work, but I thought this one was done extremely well. PF fans will find strong worldbuilding and a magic academy plot that feels familiar in a good way. Bonus points, the audiobook is awesome and has a cool Romani song break in book 2 or 3, can’t remember which.

His Secret Illumination by Scarlett Gale: Celibate monk MC is pulled into a quest to help a warrior FMC recover books stolen from the monastery. Gentle femdom mono-romance where the MC struggles with his desire versus the faith that gives him his magic. There are heists, fights, and a looming undead threat surrounding the relationship building. The MC is useful with his magic, but he is very subby, so be warned if that’s a deal breaker.

Delivering Justice by Silas Sinclair: MC has an accident that results in him becoming the first male superpowered. I’m a little embarrassed that I enjoyed this one as much as I did lol. It’s more classically harem than the rest of this list, with an MC that all the ladies love, but I found myself attached to all the characters and teared up at the end of book two. So, shrug, I’ll read N. K. Jemisin and R. F. Kuang to balance the scale of my soul 😊

I don’t think these will be for everyone on the thread, but if you’re finding you just can’t scratch that romance itch with the current PF offerings these may be a decent palette cleanser.

I also haven't read as deeply in the romance subgenre as I have in PF, so if others have suggestions feel free to throw them in the comments.
