am i making a huge mistake?

i have a dog who i love with my whole heart. i took him to get his rabies and parvo vaccines updated this past week since those are the most important.

i normally get his kennel cough vax at the same time, but i recently haven't been able to work as often so i'm delaying yearly kennel cough vax and heartworm test (he's on a preventative for heartworms) until it's cool enough (right now the heat index is like 115°F and he has a dark coat) for my buddy to actually be outside around other dogs since i also have to still buy his food, my food, flea/heartworm preventative, pay bills etc.

but now i'm worried about him getting kennel cough because i waited too long to get the vaccine and now it's expired. is it okay to wait a month or two on a vaccine + if he somehow does get kennel cough, is that fatal? is it really bad or is it more like a flu? i am in shambles and i always try to do my best for him. it just doesn't feel like enough sometimes.
