Almost 2-year-old suddenly refusing naps and wanting to sleep in our bed all night — baby due in September
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some advice because sleep has gotten really challenging with my almost 2-year-old daughter.
A little background: she had multiple surgeries as a baby, so sleep arrangements were probably different than average early on. We used a sidecar crib for quite a while so I could easily monitor and comfort her. Around 14 months, we transitioned her to her own bed.
Since then, sleep has been somewhat inconsistent. Sometimes she’ll sleep through the night, and other times she’ll wake a few times but settle back down. Recently, though, things have gotten much harder.
She’s been fighting naps, taking a very long time to fall asleep, and waking up wanting to come into my bed. Lately she seems to want to spend the entire night with me. If I try to get her back into her own bed, she gets very upset and often won’t settle.
A few additional details:
She’s almost 2 years old.
We’re moving her into her own room next week (she has still been sleeping in our room).
We’re getting her a full-size Montessori floor bed.
We have a new baby due in September.
She’s also been drooling a lot and chewing on her fingers, so I suspect her second molars may be coming in.
I’m not sure if this is a sleep regression, separation anxiety, teething, her outgrowing naps, or maybe sensing big changes coming.
For anyone who has been through something similar:
How did you help your toddler learn to fall asleep more independently?
Did moving to their own room help?
How long did it take for things to improve?
Any tips for preparing her before the new baby arrives?
I’d love to hear what worked (or didn’t work) for your family. Thanks! ❤️
