Hi all, I’ll be visiting Bulgaria for around 10 days and I’m interested in experiencing local life rather than just the main tourist attractions.
I’m thinking of doing **Sofia → Plovdiv → Ribnovo** and then exploring some smaller villages along the way.
Do you think this is a good route, or would you recommend changing anything? I’d like to avoid constantly moving around and focus on places that are genuinely interesting and have local character.

Hi all, I’ll be visiting Bulgaria and North Macedonia for 10 days and I’m really interested in experiencing local life rather than just seeing the main tourist attractions.
I’ll be starting in Sofia, but I’m only planning to spend around a day in the city. After that, I’d love to explore smaller towns and villages, see how people actually live, eat local food and experience more traditional culture.
I don’t really have much of a plan yet, so I’d love to hear your recommendations. Are there any villages or small towns that you’d particularly recommend, especially places that aren’t too touristy?
I’m happy to travel around and don’t mind getting off the beaten path. Any suggestions for a good route over the 10 days would be greatly appreciated!

I’m travelling through Bulgaria and will be around **Ribnovo from 31 August to 3 September 2026**. I’d love to experience a traditional Pomak wedding if there happens to be one taking place during those dates.
Does anyone know of any weddings happening around then, or the best way to find out about upcoming weddings?
Obviously I’d be respectful and wouldn’t want to intrude — just really interested in experiencing the local culture. 🕌🇧🇬
