1930's Savage 99 Auto Cutoff Problems
I have a Savage 99 in .250-3000 (1937 serial number) that's having problems extracting. The problem occurs because the extractor pushes the spent case to the left, and it hangs off the bolt face and then gets caught on the auto cutoff (old style). I can complete the extraction by mechanically forcing the brass back against the extractor firmly.
Auto cutoff as it reaches the bolt face
I'm apprehensive about reshaping the auto cuttof to round it and allow it to slide past the case to start extraction, as I don't know the full history of the gun, and I don't want to start modifying original parts. But if that's the best course of action, I'll take it.
Is this a known problem? Is it possibly an after market bolt of the wrong caliber?
I know the firearm functions because he took it out to a county road to manufacture some .250-3000 brass for me
