1983 944 US-spec A/C — restoring factory dual radiator fans after previous owner's modification
I have a 1983 Porsche 944, US-spec, manual, 2.5L, with A/C.
The previous owner replaced the original dual radiator-fan shroud with an aftermarket single-fan setup and also installed a manual dashboard button to turn the fan on.
I'm now restoring the original two-fan shroud and fans and trying to return the wiring to factory configuration.
What I have found so far:
- The original two fans both work when tested directly with 12 V.
- The car-side fan wires have been cut and are currently just individual wires rather than the original connectors.
- Wires I have identified near the radiator are:
- Red/black
- Brown/red
- Green/yellow
- Brown
- another brown which was previously joined together with the brown/red wire.
- The previous owner had the brown + brown/red joined together which would give you around 6/7 volts when you hit the button in the car this would go to 0 (essentially ground it and the driver side fan would spin full throttle) the other end of the fan connection would be the red/black wire which has 12volts going to it all the time.
- With the fan connected and battery powered:
- Red/black = 12 V
- Brown/red = approximately 7 V
- Brown = 0 V
- When I connect the fan plug, the primary fan immediately runs continuously, even with the engine cold.
I'm suspecting that it might be something with a relay I even think one is missing (picture attached).
I found this thread but the fuse box doesn't seem to be the same as mine.
My idea is to return it back to how it was originally and if possible keep the button to spin both fans to max if needed.
Any help is appreciated.
