Getting started - Need advice
Everyone has their own needs when it comes to a dumbphone, and I'd like your feedback on the best option for me.
Recently, I was traveling and my cell signal was total shit. Barely had maps and didn't bring my iPod classic with me for music like an idiot. I realized that the phone is really a hindrance to me in a lot of ways but has SOME uses when traveling.
I've decided to strip out pretty much everything in my phone and still use it when I travel, which I do occasionally, so I have access to GPS and digital boarding passes (for live updates on delays and gate changes).
But in my daily life I use my phone for:
- Photos (I like having the easy camera that backs up to self-hosted Immich)
- My Apple Calendar
- My Cardo app for my motorcycle helmet. (for crash detection)
- FaceTime
- Track AirTags on my gear and bike
- Apple Home
- A lightmeter app when shooting film
- Apple Notes
- Apple Podcasts for my work commutes
- Apple Reminders
I get that I'm entrenched in the Apple ecosystem but I am willing to find alternatives that are just as useful but don't annoy the hell out of me. I've looked for a really long time for ways to dumb an iPhone but there really isn't a super effective way to do it.
I'd love feedback, suggestions, and any advice on how to move away from the smartphone without losing a lot of the genuine value that comes from having an all-in-one solution in your pocket.
