Fullmind tutoring

Educators here are independent contractors, which I knew from the start.
Your experience may vary, but I will share you mine.
I started, and at first, there were several jobs. They stopped completely at the end of the academic year. They started up again around October. Many of the assignments were from school districts where middle and high school students are out on a suspension. One district, in particular, has the highest minority suspension rate in the state. Many of my assignments were students suspended for the rest of the school year. One student was a runaway. I question if online tutoring is a placement that meets these students' academic needs, as many never show. There is a residential facility locally that works with troubled youth that may be better in meeting their needs.
So, step one is to contact the student's teacher. In my experience, the overwhelming majority did not respond. If they don't get back within 24 hours, step two is to contact Fullmind. They give a canned response to prepare a lesson that follows state standards.
We are required to sit through the entire session, even if the student does not show, and during the last 20 minutes, present a mini, condensed lesson, then submit an exit ticket for the student to complete. The lessons are recorded, then, theoretically, the student watches the mini lesson, completes the exit ticket, then the educator submits a grade. At the end of the term, the educator submits a term grade. Out of all my students who were out on suspension, I do not believe that any have ever completed any of these exit tickets. So much of what I have done seemed to be wasteful of time and resources.
Over the last few months, I've received emails reminding me to follow IEPs of students who were assigned to me. If the person who sent the email watched the recording of any of the sessions, she would see that all of the pertinent students never showed, at least in my sessions.
Students are required to have their webcam and microphone on the entire session. A recent student suspended for the remainder of the school year came into a session and did not interact with me, despite repeated requests. I contacted tech support, and they called and spoke to this student's mother during three separate calls in about a 10 minute period. So, at least the first two times, he did not listen to his parent. Once he was on and turned on his microphone, he did not have his webcam on, despite mentioning having a brand new Chromebook. He then exhibited many behaviors consistent with task avoidance. He made bizarre sounds, blasted background sounds, and was disrespectful to me, but I continued with the lesson. I stated that the only issue I have is with students who refuse to work. He then pulled the race card out. I did not know that there is a race called "lazy". Interesting, because he never turned the webcam on, so I have no idea what his race was. He then stated that he would get me fired. Many of my friends are of various races.
The next day, I was locked out of assignments. They also cancelled sessions on my schedule the following day, and those schools were open. I contacted tech support. Then they told me to clear cookies. I then received a message when logging on that my account was inactive.
A few days later, I contacted tech support. They told me that they do not discuss why accounts are deactivated. I did not call for that. It also shows me that this company lacks a backbone, from what I experienced. Part of the procedure for being paid was for the educator to "approve sessions". This step does not show for up to 24 hours. I realized that the sessions from the prior day would not be able to be approved. So I contacted tech support. They then told me that I had to submit a voucher to them to bill for the assignments. I then mentioned that I was sure that this is a violation of our state's labor laws, and I would contact Labor Standards about it (I have several friends who work in the unit, which I did not mention at the time). The person then stated that finance would approve these sessions for me.
A couple days later, my phone started blowing up, notifying me of cancelled sessions. I then blocked the number, and sweet peace.
Anyway, that student appeared to have me "fired", which is just as well. These students, who were granted the privilege of receiving their education online, need more assistance than can be done virtually. Many of these students seem to be seriously troubled, as evidenced by this student's behavior and being suspended for the remainder of the academic year. Going online for their tutoring is nowhere within their reach in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.
School systems are hurting for educators. I am reading many stories about teachers jumping ship. What I experienced with this company fans the flames.
The payments received from Fullmind are milk money for me. I tutor for several companies as an IC and also receive a pension.
If you are looking for steady income, this is not the place. If you are looking to work with students who want to learn, many of the assignments, at least in my experience, do not fit the bill.
I suspect that the valve from this money will close for the districts that are receiving Title 1 or Title 4 money.

$25 Incentive for each new tutor we refer

Just wondering why I got this email a few days ago, when the last time I received an opportunity was over a month ago.
So we refer new tutors, and the work probably goes to them, since they are cheaper labor? Oh, got it.

Late arrivals

Folks, I know there has been some discussion about this before, but I had a student arrive late, and a message across the top indicated that billing starts at (time that they arrived). It appears that they are docking us for late arrivals. We are being nickeled and dimed.

Payments

Folks, I just balanced my spreadsheet with my paystubs. Something interesting. Many of my VT4S sessions were paid from the private pay account. I'm wondering if the VT4S account is running dry, and they are robbing Peter to pay Paul. I have several unpaid sessions, and they are all VT4S. The tickets haven't been opened yet, and it's been several days.
For those unaware, many of us receive multiple pay stubs: private pay, group classes, and schools. That's why you'll see multiple smaller deposits in your bank account, instead of one large deposit.
I spoke to my SO, and he thinks that maybe schools have not been paying or are slow to pay for their high-dosage tutoring. However, there was no problem like this last year.
VT4S sessions will be ending soon for the academic year. I have some thinking to do. Should I attend the remaining sessions, knowing that there is a high probability of not being paid for them? Or should I not attend them, following their rules for canceling sessions? Hmm.
Anyone have any other perspectives on this situation?

BBB reviews

Wow. I just went to Varsity Tutors' Better Business Bureau page. There have been many recent complaints. People are paying a lot of money for memberships. As we know, little of it makes its way to the tutors, who provide the service.

Wow. Assessments.

After being with VT for over 10 years and teaching multiple grades and subjects, they want me to complete assessments for each grade I teach. It will be assessed by AI and each assessment takes about 18 minutes. Multiply 12 grades by 18 minutes, then add more subjects.
