Am i really prone to self-sabotaging?

I've been told by two people that I should really reconsider the choices I make and listen to people cause I'd just sabotage myself anyway. But then, another person did say that I should value authenticity and/or listen to my guts when I'm deciding.

Is substitution supposed to "click" immediately?

I'm VERY new to acting and took my first acting class not too long ago. Our coach follows the chubbuck method and when I read her book, the tools did click for me, substitution included (although I was already familiar with it beforehand). But in practice, in rehearsals, I'm not really sure if it did anything at all. Heck, I'm not even sure if I actually understand what it really meant. I reacted to my scene partner just for who she's playing but not really for who she reminded me of in getting my SO.

I do know that a lot of actors actually do struggle with it though, but is this something that takes a looott of practice? I just signed up for this and I want to at least try to actually use it. I don't wanna give up yet but still, I'm in need of insights.
