Trying to get various linkages to connect, currently unsuccessfully.

I am new to Onshape, on a free trial as advised by the YouTube channel Inheritance Machining, which I heartily recommend.

I am trying to model a Triple expansion steam engine from the drawings of one I am building in real life but can’t make progress on due to working away.

I have modelled all the parts in a studio each and trying to build sub assemblies to then bring together. There are a lot of co dependent moving parts with multiple pivots. I am having trouble getting them to stay put after mating them together when joining the next part. I suspect I’m either doing something wrong in choosing the wrong sort of mate connector or the program isn’t quite robust enough for multiple moving connections.

For instance in the picture the top horizontal linkage won’t stay mated to the rod when I try to bring it to join to the linkage coming from the reversing crank (pic of a completed engine for context)

I am using Revolut mate connections with no limits.

I don’t expect to be able to animate it working, but I would like to be able to at least represent the finished thing and it’s proving quite frustrating.

Any pointers greatly appreciated
