How to organize my work - should I draw everything on a single sketch

I want to design a part, but I'm not sure how to practically organize my work around assemblies, parts, sketches etc.

I have a closet with sliding doors. And I also have cats. I want to design a lock to prevent cats from opening the doors. I already roughly modeled my closet and the doors, but now I wonder how should I go about actually designing my parts.

This is what I have: https://cad.onshape.com/documents/058b296ad8467b298f76cfda/v/2f92baf2a0a055ccf3e61217/e/1e0e277fb56e7ecc79f394e3?renderMode=0&uiState=6a4aed73ed1cfc62e2d64c7e

I modeled only one door and I replicated it inside of the assembly. I added sliding mates to be able to slide the doors like in reality. But now I'm not sure how to go about designing the locks, since I don't have a view with all the gaps and distances that I would need to draw the part. All this information is scattered across two part studios and the assembly.

Maybe instead of using the assembly I should simply draw everything on a single sketch? That would mean I would need to replicate bunch of drawings, but at least I would have the dimensions? On the other hand I would still need to see what happens when the doors are moved to different positions, and I would not be able to simply do it on the sketch. Assembly gives me that possibility, but still, only visually and I can not really directly design around it.

Drawing everything on a single sketch probably would work and I would get job done eventually. But it does not feel like the correct solution and it seems like it would be against the "good practices".

Is my thinking correct? What am I missing?

Free and Open Source alternative to Onshape

In the last 15 years I have being designing products on software like Inventor, SolidWorks and Fusion.

One thing that always bothered me was the lack of first class support to other operating systems than Windows.

Oneshape is only online and always in their cloud, so if someday they get acquired or close their software you are in their hands.

FreeCAD is a great product but is not intuitive for anyone coming from SolidWorks/Inventor/NX.

So I decided to change that, I am developing Oblikovati, an open source, multi platform ( runs and builds for Linux Wayland, Mac Universal and Windows) Parametric B-Rep CAD which is super lightweight.

Oblikovati is developed from the ground up, not a wrapper around OpenCascade, using GoLang and modern Vulkan API.

It opens in a second. You can use any mid tier hardware and it runs smoothly.

I have development builds ready to run for all OSes on GitHub: https://github.com/Oblikovati/Oblikovati

The features I expect to ship for a first stable release are already there including:

- Parameters & Complete Parameters Solver.

- Sketch 2D and 3D with complete Constraints Solver.

- Part Modelling including Sheet Metal support.

- Drawings & Annotations.

- Basic Assembly with Joints & Constraints + Assembly Parameters Linking.

- Imports: DXF, DWG, PDF Vectors, Obj, Stl, STEP, Various Point Cloud Files.

- Exports: DXF, STEP, STL, 3MF, OBJ.

Some niceties are: Complete UI color customisation with dark and light themes and Text format documents, so your designs are git friendly and easy to track design changes.

I am happy to receive bug reports, feature requests and any feedback helping to bring the software faster to a stable release 1.

I would love to be able to import a font file into my project

I currently use the common workaround of creating my text in inkscape and saving as a dxf file then importing into my workspace. It would be really wonderful if I could just import the font file and use it with the text tool.

Anyone know if that is possible, or if I could suggest it as a future feature?

I built a sophisticated "Blend corner" custom feature with Onshape's upcoming MCP server

A fun experiment - I built this custom feature in a couple of hours with only my requirements and a little bit of encouragement. Claude code was the LLM working with the Onshape FeatureScript MCP server(coming soon!).

Seeking advice: Would you use this to CAD? What would you change?

I am designing a custom keyboard/Macropad designed specifically for CAD. I primarily use Onshape and Fusion. I definatly want units and the common keys for dimension, sketch and drawing tools, I included a few others. I am SEEKING CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK. What would you change, add or want different. Please let me know!

Advanced mechanical design practice

I'm looking for some good spots to find drawings to practice just general part and assembly design. Ideally parts that are industrial and not very organic as that's what I work with most in my industry.

Does anyone know of any good resources?

Kiri import too complex?

Trying to design some pods for my A pillars to hold my tweeters and midbass, however when I first imported these models they had thousands of vertices and meshes, and was taking forever to do even the simplest transforms, i couldnt find a good axis to rotate off of either, i gave up and tried again today only to notice my model looks a bit more solid now instead of a mesh but I cant seem to do anything to it?

Also yes this was taken on mobile just because it was easier to screenshot and post but I do the work on desktop pc, am I making a newbie mistake? What should I do?

My lightening Featurescript "Enlighten" is really coming along

Hi, I’m a mentor for 11329 ICE Robotics and 3494 The Quadrangles, and a Featurescript enthusiast (I wrote EZwire).

I have been working on my own Lighten script for a while: Enlighten, attempting to make it faster and more reliable, or at the very least, when it fails, trying to show the user how and why it failed so they can fix it. There are always some combinations of wall, rib, and radius dimensions that will fail, but it seems to be working well. Give it a try and let me know.

I was inspired by the two major existing lighten scripts (Julia's Lighten and 2471's Lighten), but have done some portions in a novel way.

My Enlighten on the left (677 ms), Part Lighten on the right (893 ms). A little faster, and with more control over the result.

Onshape blackmails people

Omshape just tried to blackmail me and force me to buy the upgraded plan 1500 a year by taking away my access to my own files. Do not trust this service.

Game to help with 3dConnexion SpaceMouse skills

I just got a SpaceMouse to use when modeling a few days ago. I really love it and I am mostly picking it up quickly. But I thought it might be fun to make a simple “game” to help drill the skills in. This is in the same conceptual vein as Aim Trainers some people will use with FPS games. The Aim Trainer itself is so simple it can really hardly be called a game, but its still pretty fun and addictive and does a good job of helping you tighten skills.

You can technically play the game without a SpaceMouse, but unless you were a QWOP god, I dont think it will be much fun without a SpaceMouse.  You can configure it through the same system panel you use to configure your bindings in all the other SpaceMouse apps.

Let me know what you think! Hope its fun/helpful for others.

CNC processing

Hello.

I've been using Onshape for a while as a replacement for Fusion360 since I don't want to use Windows anymore (I have a Mac where it is used sporadically).

I'm interested in generating stuff for my CNC, before I made the parts in Fusion, then generated the tools pass there, exported them, and brought the files to the CNC (an X-Carve).

How do you do it if you are using Onshape? I know it doesn't have it for free, but I'm not a pro user of those tools. What application do you use to process the parts for CNC after you design them in Onshape?

How to make a duct/pipe

I need to 3d print a connector for ventilation duct for a kitchen hood. Long story short contractor messed up, and now I have smaller, not centered pipe in the ceiling, and I want to connect bigger pipe with an offset to it. To complicate things further, because hood will be mounted with an offset, mounting bracket for the hood is partiality obstructing inlet to the smaller pipe, so there is very narrow gap that I have to work with, and I don't want to lose any more air flow doing that. So I plan to cut part of the smaller pipe on the side, to let the connection run at an angle.

This is what I'm trying to connect:

https://preview.redd.it/6paysm7yxzah1.png?width=1488&format=png&auto=webp&s=7a36568f3e4b44e693ea3e187bd1fe738ab82a79

From the side:

https://preview.redd.it/s2u3mh01yzah1.png?width=1893&format=png&auto=webp&s=34400914cee9d8229e065c0be0570981f0e1cee8

From the front:

https://preview.redd.it/1wrs5eg2yzah1.png?width=1564&format=png&auto=webp&s=9b319ae576789696057d5fefe02952b64270731d

The "L" line you see is the constraint that I'm working with - it marks the point where the mounting bracket will sit, and I can not go past that.

My initial attempt looked like this:

https://preview.redd.it/d89q1biuyzah1.png?width=1271&format=png&auto=webp&s=2f142784355351152825c89893a8e23bbffc3c3e

This is a simple loft - I drew couple of circles along the path and connected them with a thin loft.

But it is missing the cutout in the top narrow pipe. With that cutout I'm unable to connect it and do the loft for some reason. It is also too narrow in the middle, and I would need to find a way to draw guides for the loft.

Do you have any tips on how to do it? What tools should I research and learn? Or maybe what tutorials would help me with this problem? Thanks

Need Help with Design

HI! I am a student designer using OnShape and am trying to recreate the gripper in the first slide for a project. I have made past iterations and am struggling to design something that will work. The 2nd slide is what I have designed most recently. Can someone give me some tips as to how to create a similar design? For some context I am trying to create a kind of 3 finger gripper that is an exoskeleton so you can put your fingers through it.

Help with how to create another part from existing part

I want to create a lid that follows the form of this existing part, with extrusions that dip into the part for a snap fit. I'm not sure the terminology to search for to find the best technique. Like an "inverse cavity" from another part, I want to partially fill in the existing cavities and connect them with a lid.

I tried to create an offset with a bit of overhang, but the fillets made things a bit weird and I couldn't select the right curvature to create a new extrusion to cap it.

Trying to avoid having to maintain all the dimensions of individual parts to keep them fitting together.

Simple Secure Lid Latch Mechanism?

This is one of those things where I'm sure there is specific vocabulary that I don't have.

My kids are always asking me for small game boxes, deck boxes, containers etc. and I know this is one of the best uses for 3d printing. But what always trips me up is making a container that has a secure way to keep it closed that also won't wear out in just a few dozen uses. These boxes will get thrown into backpacks and camp bags and I don't want the contents spilling out everywhere. The problem is, most of what I see online are compression fits or snap latches, and those seem like they’ll wear out fast.

I've seen latches like this and this but they're pretty bulky and the plastic will deform pretty quickly if they're used a lot.

So far the top idea I've had was a half screw with bolt but I hate dealing with threading especially if I have to model the fillets nicely to print in the right orientation.

My wishlist for an ideal latch:

  • Easy to replace when parts wear out (I love hinge designs that use raw filament as the pin)
  • Low profile, doesn’t stick out much, both to save space and to avoid breaking off easily.
  • No extra hardware, no screws, magnets, or other components, so it stays simple and cheap.
  • Doesn't have loose parts that can get lost

I know it's a wishlist but I'm sure this community has some great ideas.

Wrap Tool Not Selecting a Target, Please Help!

Edit SOLVED! Using a circle and not an oval fixed it. My inital frustrating attempts yesterday DID use a circle, but also used a fence sketch that was overly complicated. A simpler sketch combined with a circle instead of an oval the trick. THanks everyone!

Original: I'm trying to wrap and extrude this wrought iron fencing sketch as a new solid onto this cylinder and it is not allowing me to select the cylinder as a Target. So I thought maybe the problem was with my sketch, so I tried a test with just typing my name, and it did the same thing!
I had been struggling with this yesterday in another file, so I stepped away and decided to start simple, and watch/follow several wrap tool tutorials, and I followed each one on several documents:

  • Create a center point circle (I tried circles, too, but I ultimately need an oval) with dimensions.
  • Extrude to create a cylinder
  • Create an offset plane
  • Add my sketch (or type my name)
  • Use the wrap tool and select my tool (sketch or written name)
  • Select the target**

Here is where I was unable to follow. My target does not give a yellow outline and it is not selectable. It seems like the simplest tutorial to follow and I simply don't know what I'm doing wrong. I follow along with every step. Onshape adds their logo in their tutorial, so I know a more complicated-ish sketch is possible, but I can't even do my name! Please help, and I thank you all in advance.

Extrude to part not working with thin width

Hello,

I'm trying to fill in some walls in a part, but the extrude step fails when the width is less than 6mm. I have attached a picture of the expected result and the result I am getting when I try it with <6mm.

I am trying to do an extrude to part because there are multiple drafts in the existing geometry. I also tried achieving the same result with a sweep, but it left gaps between itself and the rest of the shell.

I imagine this has something to do with the angle where the extrude meets the part below, but I don't know how to fix it. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks
