Intermittent irritation/discoloration of calluses, resolves in ~1wk? (25M)
As the title says. I’m no contractor, but I work with my hands enough that they’re always somewhat callused. They’re usually hardly noticeable, but every so often (maybe once or twice a year) they’ll suddenly (and I mean “practically overnight” suddenly) become super itchy, and shortly afterwards the darker yellow color develops. The pinprick red/brown dots take another day or two to develop, so I think they’re probably a result of me scratching at the calluses during this time.
It doesn’t happen with the calluses on my feet, and doesn’t even affect my whole hand, as you can see. It DOES affect both my hands, but it’s much worse on my right hand; presumably because the left one is less callused.
The itching doesn’t last long; after 3-4 days or so it’s easy to ignore, and 1-2 days later is gone entirely. The discoloration usually fades shortly after.
Tried doing research, but nothing seems to fit. The rapid onset, short duration, and it only affecting already-existing calluses don’t match anything I read about, and it doesn’t look like any pictures I’ve seen on here or elsewhere.
It’s just a rare minor inconvenience, so I don’t see much reason to spend $ to visit a dermatologist, but I’m still very curious about what it could be. Hard to tell if there’s a trigger because it’s so long in between “flareups” that I always forget the circumstances of the previous one. Exposure to some chemical? Excessive vibration? Change in activity levels?
