I've been resisting joining FB for a long time because I don't want another time-draining thing in my life but some of my hobbies have active communities there and I sometimes feel out of the loop.

I don't know how FB works and how private you can make it. My concern is that I've ghosted an abusive family member and I know he's on FB. Since we have an uncommon surname I'm concerned that the algorithms will send him a notice along the lines of "people you might know" or something like that. Or the algo's will even know that we're related and send him my contact info based on that. Is there a way to pre-emptively block him from messaging me in case he searches my name in a search engine and it links to FB?
