Started Chimera Ant - follow up first time watcher

I posted about a week ago on how I’m currently on my first watch for HxH, never read the manga and shared some thoughts/theories for the series. Some have asked for me to post as I keep watching, so here’s the follow up (was initially going to do daily recap, but I think 1x a week works better)

Original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/HunterXHunter/s/7TCVsGVeWi

Spoilers through ep 75ish below:

I’ve started the first ep of Chimera Ant where Gon meets Kite again. Per the suggestions here, I read chapter 1 and so far I felt it wasn’t really needed since they gave the background in that episode. I didn’t feel that “oh it’s him again!” Reunion feeling while watching it, but then again I’ve only seen the first ep of the arc so far.

I was not a fan of the Yorknew City arc. Felt the Spiders were built up as a big bad group only for nothing really to come out of it. Felt it had so much potential to be better and fell flat. They’ve been hinting they’ll come back in some shape or form as the main antagonists again, so hoping that’s the case. They were side characters, if that, during Greed Island so I don’t really count that as an antagonist arc for them.

Power scaling (or lack of it) is weird, I get Kurapika set a condition for the power up, but after Greed Island arc I just felt the power scaling isn’t there, buuuut it’s a non-issue for my watch so far.

Killua def my fave character. Reminds me of a combo of Yusuke and Hiei. His dynamic with Bisky was fantastic.

Greed Island was fantastic, loved how they showed the progression with their training and them getting stronger.

Gon - mixed feelings about you rn, his stubbornness vs the Bomber dude pissed me off.

I was hoping for more team stories with kura, leo gon and killua, as much as I dislike Leorio. He was clutch in that hotel lights out scene tho, so gotta give him credit there.

It looks like we’re also going to finally do some hunting. For a show called hunter x hunter and the intro talking about hunting, there’s barely any through the first 60 or so episodes.

Hisoka - why do they gotta make his stuff so pervy lmao, hella unexpected when they met him at Greed Island.

Here are my predictions based on what’s happened so far.

Chimera queen ate humans (the 2 kids so far) and is now having her soldiers hunt humans. She either eats a shit ton of humans to make a powerful king OR eats a hunter that’s been weakened in battle and bam strong ant king.

Gon’s stubbornness is going to get someone killed. They keep hinting at this and given the ant queen eating humans thing, I feel it’ll happen this arc. I hope it’s not Killua, but they’ve been showing the BFF vibes all series, so emotionally makes sense if Killua dies, but bro deserves to live. Would be wild if Killua is the one that gets hurt, ant queen eats him, then Gon has to defeat Killua Ant King.

They mentioned life force = aura during heaven arena arc and noticed in Greed Island that too much usage = fainting (when gon punched the dodgeball). My guess is there’s diff aura colors depending how much life force you use (cause Gon’s aura changed to gold and some other color very briefly).

My guess is there’s a forbidden technique where you can shorten your life span for extra power boost or maybe even die from it. Seems like an enhancer type of technique for how they keep describing them as stubborn in general lol

I would like Kurapika and Leorio to return this arc in some capacity and more trained. We can do a montage training segment for them and catch them up to be around the same strength as Gon/Killua

I wonder if they’ll introduce a 2 star hunter. They already shown Tzezguerra as a 1 star and Ging as 3 star, so curious if a 2 star will show up.

Gon will learn a new technique, there’s no way his only special move is rock paper scissors. I refuse to believe that.

Given this ant arc is over 50 episodes on Netflix, safe to say a lot of stuff is gonna happen, I do like that it feels there’s been no filler eps.

Arc after is probably Chrollo getting his Nen back from the exorcist person.

So far here’s how I’d rank the arcs so far:

Greed Island - 1
Heaven Arena - 2
Yorknew City - 3
Hunter License - 4

I’ll likely watch 5-8 eps today, excited to see what happens.

Please don’t spoil if any of my predictions are right or wrong, it’s fun to guess and see what happens.

First time watching hunter x hunter after many attempts

Hi everyone, huge YYH fan here. Heard about HxH about 8 yrs ago, came up in convo as I had mentioned Yu Yu Hakusho is my all time favorite anime.

In the past 4 yrs or so, I've tried to watch the 2010s version of the show and it was such a struggle to get past episode 3. Not sure what it is, but first 3 episodes didn't hook me in so I kept stopping there.

On my 5th attempt last week, I finally made it past episode 3 and am currently ep 34 (Heaven Arena newbie fighters).

How did any other YYH fans stop themselves from comparing both shows? Obviously they're not 1 to 1 comparisons, but given it's the same creator you can see influences from YYH and updated scenarios that were fun to watch.

I'm definitely enjoying the anime (subbed) and the Heaven Arena arc is right up my alley. Def would have preferred this as the first arc, but I digress.

Also is it just me or did anyone really dislike Leorio in the beginning? Idk what it is, but I really don't like his character so far. Not because he seems the weaker of the 4, but he comes of annoying to me, not in an endearing way.

Gon and Killua are so fun to watch, naive vs realistic chemistry.

Loving the time skips and pacing of the show too. I felt Hunter License Arc went on a bit too long for my taste, but I read that the 90s version was even longer!

Hisoka reminds me of Kefka from FF6, probably a common comparison.

I enjoy the "power" system so far with Nen, Gyo and all of those disciplines.

I'm hoping the show doesn't dip in quality in later season. Would love to see a bit of a dark turn down the line, but hard to envision given the cheerful nature of Gon.

No favorite character yet tho.

Sorry if this post isn't allowed, I didn't see any pinned posts for "daily anime" discussions or anything like that and I wanted to interact with other folks who like this show too.

Edit: they be talking a lot about aura being another word for life force/energy on the show. Given some have hinted it will have some darkish turns, my guess is someone expends life force/aura, is too weak and dies (or injured a la Guy from Naruto), because of the inherent risk of using your life force for a power boost.
