A real first-world problem, but opinions will be appreciated...
A week or so ago I was clearing out my old clothes and said to my wife that I didn't know what to do with a couple of t shirts that were in a colour that I don't wear because it just doesn't suit me and I wouldn't buy them for myself. One of them was an expensive gift, too.
Fast forward to today, it's my birthday and my wife gives me a top in that colour, saying that it can be returned if I don't like it. I didn't want to lie to her, given what I had told her only a few days ago, so I told her that I probably wouldn't wear it and it may be best to return it. We didn't have a fight about it, but she's clearly saddened and upset by it. She bought it weeks ago before I told her about my preferences, and it's a piece of official merch of a sports team that I support, so she really wanted to make me happy. She asked me several times if I was sure. I just kept saying that I was, but it just sounded ungrateful.
For context, we have been together for almost 20 years.
I feel terrible about it, but I also know that she would see through any lie immediately. AITA?
