Flying to Europe in July with a layover in Dubai, and with everything going on lately, am kinda worried about possible delays/cancellations.

Thinking of doing this:
Book a backup flight that doesn’t go through Dubai (ideally one I can cancel, even if there’s a fee). If my Emirates flight goes ahead, I’ll just cancel the backup and eat the cancellation fee. If things go south and the Emirates flight gets cancelled or disrupted, I’ll take the backup instead and hope there is a refund from Emirates..

Does this sound like a reasonable plan, or is there a better way to play it?

(Backup flight is extremely expensive right now though..)
