I want to share that I love woodworking.

I want to share that I love woodworking.

I've recently spoken with newcomers who feel discouraged by some aspects of woodworking. Cost is one concern, but what worries me more is that woodworking doesn't seem ‘enjoyable’ to them. I enjoy it, and I want to share some positivity on this sub to motivate newcomers. Here is a picture of my happy place, staining a knob and tote from an old plane I'm restoring. Does anyone have some positive words of wisdom to share with the new members of our community?

Any idea what the make, model, and year of this No.5 plane is?

It’s 14 inches long with a 2 inch blade, which I consider a No.5 in my book. It has very few markings, but all the parts are there. Made in Canada. “C44” on the underside of the frog at the bottom edge, and a “1” near the top of the frog underneath. Besides that, I have no idea. Any clues, guys?

SOLVED: The Defiance #1205
1932-1953
Length 14”
Cutter width 2″

EDIT: Thank you for the info guys. The Defiance has red totes and knobs, and I found the same color when I took them off. So I'm sure it's a Defiance #1245 No. 5 now. It's nothing special, but it was $7. It's complete and not damaged. I don't have anything from the 1940s, so I'm going to fix it up this weekend and see how she goes.

Edit Edit: Interesting side note: I'm in Vancouver, BC, and I found this in a junk shop. The Sharpie writing on the iron says ‘UBC’, which is our college here. I don't know if it belonged to a staff member, was used for teaching, or belonged to a student. The university was founded in 1908, so with the plane being from the 1940s, it has a grain of local history. I think she's worth spending a few hours on.
