Adventures of a dev editor being dev edited. Pt. 1

Hello everybody!

I’m currently working with an amazing author and human on a 12 book contemporary romance series. The people, places, and plots have been bouncing around in her head and her heart for fifteen years. I’m thrilled to be a part of her journey.

At the same time, I am being dev edited myself on a romcom and a novella as part of a four book series.

I found five romance dev editors on reedsy and tried them out on samples of my work. I share my experiences anonymously with you so you can see the range of responses I got ON EXACTLY THE SAME PAGES.

No AI used by me or them. Not judging, just saying.

DE #1 - Self-published author. Lots of five star reviews. Great person. Loved my writing and plot. Was big into counting how many notes they gave per page. Thought I’d found my person! I was wrong. Very wrong. Over a thousand dollars wrong. It still hurts. They: inserted jokes which were inappropriate, inserted dialogue which changed a character’s personality, lectured me on grammar DESPITE NOT FINDING ONE GRAMMAR MISTAKE. As an editor myself, if there are grammar mistakes in my writing, they are 98% of the time due to typos. 1% of the time because my other language sneaks in. Would only recommend to people who want the editor to be more of a co-author.

DE#2 - Not an author. A seasoned editor. Told me to “lose” half of my book. But loved the other half. Wanted more like that. Does not like reading more than one, two max, POVs. Disapproved of an irreverent and profane character’s existence. This was all helpful. They wanted the book I started to write. And which I may end up writing if my current book doesn’t resonate with other editors. So, they were well worth the money. They could have been more polite but it didn’t bother me. I do not tell writers to “lose” anything. I would recommend this editor to people who have medium to thick skins.

DE#3 - JACKPOT! Charged me the least. Has reviewed thousands of manuscripts over their career. Immediately got me and my book. Gave me notes which were extremely helpful. Wanted more of what #2 wanted to cut out. Hope to work with them forever.

DE#4 - Sigh. This person fired me. First, they corrected my grammar and syntax in two spots. But they were wrong. I do not make the grammar rules. I am not in charge of defining words or deciding what constitutes an idiom. So I just sent back neutral comments. “This is proper subject verb agreement. The subject is X, a collective noun, which requires a singular verb in this case.” & “This is an idiom which is standard and common.” No response. No worries. They were in the camp of DE#2. So I said, “From your comments, it feels like this book, or at least half of it, is not your kind of book. Which is fine because I often learn more from people in that position.” They became very defensive. Felt I was critiquing their critique? Said not able to work with me. It’s a shame. I would recommend them to people whose writing I thought was a match. Maybe. I worry about thin skinned editors.

Have a happy Saturday!

Looking for Other RomCom Hybrid Women’s Fiction Authors

Happy Saturday! Anybody writing romcom + women’s fiction hybrids? What the heck do I mean? I write romcoms which have all the romance beats and storyline plus a HEA or HFN. I also include a full women’s fiction plot. For example, a woman may be dealing with a chronic health issue. Her LI is part of her journey but it’s not about the LI’s part.

Will read and comment kindly and respectfully.

Seasoned non-fiction writer and editor doing the final edits on my debut romcom novel. Happy to read your book blurb or the first couple of pages of your manuscript and provide kind, mrespectful, and actionable feedback. For free, as my time permits. I’m probably not a good choice for anything dark or disturbing though I wish you the best of luck!

Looking for any romantic comedy writers who want to be part of small group.

Just set up a FB group for romantic comedy writers. Figured we could hang out, talk about our writing, do writing swaps. Monitored. No spam. One self-promo post per day. DM me if on FB and interested. Will cap size at some point if it grows. Thanks!

Cover design shenanigans

I am an author who feels very strongly about using a human to produce my first cover, even sacrificing money from an already tiny ad buy budget to do so. I hired an artist on reedsy. Whatever I ask for, she pushes back. We are now going back and forth over what pink is Barbie pink. She told me she researched it. The result is attached. If she had to research it, why couldn’t she just have asked me? I found it in two seconds because there was this little indie film a while ago, very niche. FFS. This is nice but there is no Barbie pink.

This is nice. But no Barbie pink.

I am perplexed by a cover artist who is refusing to make pink background stripes contrast more on your cover?

My cover, sorry. I want different shades of pink stripes on my cover. If it performs poorly, I will redesign. cover artist refusing to do it. says has to be in same chrome family.

Would like your thoughts please on using Prologue as reader filter so people who do not like profanity or absurd humor or both can get out very quickly but people who do will stay a while?

The run on sentence in the Title is a gift with purchase.

My debut romcom novel is high energy. Filled with inventive profanity, neologism, and wordplay. Not everybody’s heavy white or cream ceramic tankard filled with Guinness on the rocks.

If I drank alcohol, I would drink it over ice.

Never met a tangent or a clown tripping over their big red shoes while chasing their tiny car because a chicken who needed to cross the road stole it and then crossed the road and a bridge before they came to it while listening to the terrifying audiobook version of “Green Eggs and Ham.”

FUCK.

Not embarrassed to write intimate scene, but I’ve got nothing.

I posted yesterday about the trouble I was having writing my first slamming scene. I‘m writing my first RomCom. Extensive background in non-fiction writing and editing. Never had a problem getting it up and on the page before. I am not embarrassed at all. And yet. I got nothing. Got great advice on here though❣️

Anybody want to do a tropercise? One minute stream of consciousness opening sentence or sentences. No edits. Trope is Cinderella. Extra point if you include a beverage seamlessly.

”I know most people do not put ice cubes in their milk,” I say to the server in Vaca Cafe, a dairy-themed restaurant where I’m waiting to meet my boss, Mr. Dad Joke. Nice ink, though. Imlove me a koi fish tat.

Ping.

Oh, great. Mr. DJ just cancelled our working grilled cheese lunch and wants me in the office immediately. I wave at koi tat guy but he’s distributing bowls of Mac ‘N Cheese to some kind of mommy toddler field trip.

I leave the money with a tip on the table.

As I’m walking to my car, I twist my ankle on the parking lot gravel sending the contents of my industrial sized tote bag flying. Spit!

Sitting here looking with disgust at my first ever boingy boingy scene.

BLECH!

I just wrote my first intimate scene ever.

I’m a seasoned non-fiction writer and editor, but this is my first romcom rodeo. I am no prude.

Just a woman trying to fit her main characters together. In bed.

Trying for a spice level of two or three chilis because I use a fuckload of cursing and innuendo beforehand so it feels odd to slam the door shut once people get naked.

To give my struggle a bit of context. I’m at 47,000 words. I’ve worked in three haikus, a nosy nun who always alliterates, and an anthropomorphized sexy brownie à la mode. But this crack smacking bouncy bed scene feels like Mt. Everest. If Mt. Everest were two decently abled thirty year olds whose cis het little hearts belong together.

Here’s a snippet:
“He kissed me softly next to my initials.”

I know, right? It just jumps off the page and straddles your face. Wantonly.

Hope everybody is having a great Sunday!
