CDL Driver Meets Fiber Optics

30 y/o M USA KY

So, as the title says I’m a recently graduated CDL Driver. Right before I went into CDL school I got scooped up by a Fiber contractor, as just a hand while I waited to start CDL school. Apparently they’re very interested in having someone with a CDL.

Now, I’ve learned a lot about running drops during my time with them. Both commercial and residential, Aerials, Burials, easements, the works.

They are interested in keeping me on board. I’ve had other companies approach me to drive for them in a more typical CDL A position, and at first it seemed to be a no brainer that after school I would go and work for one of them and maybe continue running drops on the side.

Recently though, our supervisor has offered to also teach me to splice and pay for my certs as a tech and splicer.

Tl;dr has anyone ever heard of someone making a solid career with a CDL Class A, Fiber Tech, and Splicer?

I start CDL school in June but I recently found a company that runs fiber optic lines offering 28/hr. However most of the time it’d be a bucket truck and only sometimes flatbed hauling equipment and of course fiber spools. I’ll have a CDL A.

No benefits, but Good start? I left a non CDL Uniform and linen delivery to do this. It was about 24/hr, commission off the route but the sales guys and bosses at the wash plant were pissing customers off, adding to the workload of drivers, and we had sales quotas so it was stressful.
