UW / Omenpath Batch 15 (TMC/TMT: Oops all Mutagens)

All of the mutagen token-producing cards from TMC/TMT plus an extra who synergises with it. Not really sure I'll get around to the other counters synergy cards from these sets though I'll probably produce a more thematically aligned version of Mutational Advantage, as my only version of that right now is themed around the rad/portent token set.

For this batch I've used almost exclusively art from Sean Andrew Murray, and nearly all of that art -- so far as I can tell -- was made for the Gateway board game project in which he's involved. So if you like the art used here, I very strongly recommend you check it out.

My now standard disclaimer: I do not exert myself to match the cards to existing lore entities and I am only too happy to change the types (and the types of tokens the card makes) if I feel like it matches the art. I do this because there are a lot of cards I've earmarked to UWify (something like 150ish when I started, and over 400 now), and I'm not exactly thrilled to spend even more time trying to match these cards to some or another thing from the lore. So I just make stuff up. I'm aware that changing the types of cards changes the balance, but I don't care. Please refrain from tediously "reminding" me of this. These will be used for very low powered kitchen table magic and I am perfectly capable of trusting myself not to abuse type changes. One other thing: You do not have my permission to reupload any cards I've shared here to any other websites or databases. Obviously I can't and won't stop you from doing that, but consider this a record of my answer on the matter.

All cards should have the 1/8 bleed edge via CardConjurer (except the early ones in the list below) and I do not have versions of the cards without bleed.

UW / Omenpath Batch 14 (20 cards, LTR to HOB)

Another round of cards, heavily drawing from HOB. Can't say that set has been mechanically very exciting for me since I don't particularly care for typal stuff. Still have to decide how many of the treasures cards and the sagas I will get around to -- probably not many -- but at least the Smaug cards are done. I'm probably going to submit my MPC order within a couple weeks since the next set is UW; fortunately, there's not that much left still to make. I guess, in retrospect, I've been on a bit of a bird kick.

My now standard disclaimer: I do not exert myself to match the cards to existing lore entities and I am only too happy to change the types (and the types of tokens the card makes) if I feel like it matches the art. I do this because there are a lot of cards I've earmarked to UWify (something like 150ish when I started, and over 230 now), and I'm not exactly thrilled to spend even more time trying to match these cards to some or another thing from the lore. UW / Omenpath Batch 13 (20 cards, 40K to HOB)

Disclaimer: You do not have my permission to reupload any cards I've shared here to any other websites or databases. Obviously I can't stop you from doing that, but consider this a record of my answer on the matter.

Another round of cards. Not much to add at this point other than that finding art for clone / copy effects is an actual nightmare. The Rovina Cai art I used for the reskin is one I'd actually considered using for a forest or possibly a mountain.

The Mutavore is a bit of a risk. The proportions of the art place the creature's head really close to the top edge, and since I prefer to use borderless frames where possible, the 'default' position would have the title bar covering the creature's face, which is generally a marker of bad placement. In this case, I opted for a framebreak that does cover up the name of the card. I have a version of it using regular extended art framing but I personally don't mind the obscured name.

UW / Omenpath Batch 12 (Oops, all lands: LTR to MSH)

Started working on lands. I'm definitely not going to be covering all the UB lands, but I will do the remaining enemy checklands once they're out. I realise that the MSH allied checklands are already named generically, but, you know, whatever. As far as the other lands, I basically just make them if I find something neat I'd like to put on a card.

I've been holding off on the lands for a while because I have also been thinking over reskinning the verges, which I find pretty uniformly outside my taste art-wise, but that sort of thing is not really for sharing here I suppose. Maybe in a comment once the rest of the checklands are done.

Also: started a little experiment here with fading out the title bar sometimes rather than framebreaking them as I have in the past. Not sure exactly how I feel about it (Monument to Violence is more successful than Humble Home, for one) but I'll see how it goes. Knowing how to do it will at least help framebreaking stuff that is otherwise very difficult to do, like glowing lights or very diffuse strands of hair.

Omenpath / UW Batch 11

Another round of cards here. I've also been going back through already finished (and sometimes posted) cards and tinkering with them. Some have new art or use promo frames to show off existing art. I don't feel quite right about making a new post just for those tweaked cards but maybe I'll go back and add comments to my old posts.

Plenty of cards are done that are still to post, but behind the scenes only two major chunks of the project remain untouched: lands, and then the black artifact creatures. I want to settle on something that will let me clump together the necrons, the forthcoming borg, and the two MODOK cards that only have the villain type that I will not tolerate. I might've just gone ahead with 'cyborg' if they'd used that for the borg, but, no, we have yet another type in the quite cumbersome pile. I was hoping for Bant or Sultai borg just for the sake of variety but I suppose I shouldn't be shocked they've taken the more predictable path.

Omenpath / UW Batch 9 (FIN to MSH transforms)

EDIT: Fuck, it's actually batch 10.

A set of transform cards and their associated tokens that I've been chewing over for a while. It's a weird batch in that I can't really say I'm happy with any of them, but in the interests of moving on I'll share them here and count that the end of fiddling with them. I will probably make a couple more once cardconjurer has the right selection of borderless frames for sagas but for now I think this is it for UB transform cards.

My now standard disclaimer: I do not exert myself to match the cards to existing lore entities and I am only too happy to change the types (and the types of tokens the card makes) if I feel like it matches the art. Omenpath / UW Batch 9 (PIP: Oops, all Rad Counters)

Had a bit of breakthrough on a side project (within this side project) recently and was able to finally finish the rad counters + proliferate cards from the fallout set. This should cover nearly all of the PIP cards that refer to rad counters as well as some of the proliferate cards.

Most reskins of rad counters I've seen have interpreted them as something like a disease. I focused on the mechanic of getting a known number of counters ahead of time, knowing a rad counter is going to hurt you but not exactly how, and then once it hurts you it's gone. This combo of foreknowledge and finality led me to treat them as a kind of unitary bad luck or a measurement of how bad your fate is. Eldraine seemed like the right place to put that kind of thing.

This project is a little different in that I am making them for someone who does intend to try to play them at an LGS; incidentally, it's the same LGS I used to use, and one which categorically bans all proxies of any kind for any game of magic, but alas I shall let him handle that problem. Because these are actually going to be used with strangers, I've been particular to not change anything other than the flavour words + titles, although in practice what that meant was just completely ignoring the 'mutant' type. Very frustrating work overall, and certainly the last time I'll make that commitment, but I am reasonably happy with the flavour, at least, so I figured I'd shared them here.

Although I think I made it work this time, these cards also remind me why I generally dislike using the set specific showcase frames.... But man, if we could get a set of properly Eldraine borderless frame at some point....

The transform cards are still coming... but next time!

All cards should have the 1/8 bleed edge via CardConjurer (except the early ones in the list below) and I do not have versions of the cards without bleed. Previous work:

Universes "Within" (Aside?): More of the Barthune "Block"

Hello everyone,

Back again with more Universes Within (ish) treatments of UB cards. You'll notice these are a bit higher res than the last batch. Well, following suggestions in the comments on the last post, I looked into cardconjurer, found it suitable for my printing needs, and have remade nearly all of the cards I put together in MSE.

The margins are extra large because you have to leave room for the printer's bleed edge, and I am simply too lazy to manage two different versions of all of these cards. I do want to get these printed once I'm fully done, but I think I will hold off until previews for the next UB set are done before I put together an order with a printer.

At any rate, here's some more of the cards that I've envisioned are related to Barthune himself, as well as a pair of outliers. I don't think I'm going to get around to posting all of the UW cards I've been making (which is nearly 150 cards) as that's a spamming amount of posts, but I felt I should at least wrap up the ones that are linked to Barthune since he seems to have been well received. Maybe all the junk token cards can come in next time...

Overall, I have to say that hindsight exposes what a foolish idea this whole thing was. If I'd known in advance how long it would take, I think there's a solid chance I wouldn't have done it. My process was basically:

  1. Create UW text treatments in Magic Set Editor (MSE)
  2. Look around for suitable art
  3. Tweak typelines/tokens to fit the art
  4. Occasionally completely revise the UW treatment to match art (example: Mentored by the Old Gods)
  5. Then remake every card in Card Conjurer

If you're planning to do something similar but with a smaller number of cards, I recommend skipping the MSE 'phase' of this. However, given the larger number of cards at hand, I'll probably still draft them in MSE as card conjurer has more limited storage options.

NB: I make these for myself, and am sharing them in both the spirit of generosity and the spirit of nearly overwhelming spite that caused me to make them in the first place. Since I primarily play casually with friends, I have on occasion tweaked the type line of a card or a token it produces in order to bring it in line with the art. My LGS is a real stickler about proxies anyway so I wouldn't use even a completely faithful re-do there. Neither God nor man nor I can help you if you are confused by what I'm doing. However, please definitely let me know if you spot any transcription errors other than typal changes.

Some Universes Within (ish) cards I've been working on

I've been slowly working my way through various sets as far back as 40K/WHO and making UW-enough versions of cards in which I'd otherwise be interested. Since I'm making decent headway now, I figured I'd share a batch of them, particularly a chunk of them which I have more or less tried to relate together. As several of these will show, I'm also not above tweaking the type line.

Where I get the art:

  • Little used card types (conspiracies, "draft matters" cards, archenemy, planes, etc)
  • Unset art, especially Unstable, was a godsend for this particular batch given all the robots and artifact creatures
  • Art from little-used cards
  • Art from artists who've otherwise made magic cards but which isn't on a magic card
  • Stuff I scrounged from artstation

To be honest, dealing with the art is exhausting, and I'm glad to be reasonably confidant I'm nearly done with most of the ~150 cards I've earmarked for the UW treatment. The art is most of the reason I futz around with the typeline (or the tokens) because I truly just cannot be bothered to find the perfect art for a proxy when "good enough" is already at hand.

Cards are all made in MSE. Doubtful that they're suitable for getting printed but I'm going to give it a shot anyway once I'm done, though I suspect there'll be a few upcoming artifact creatures of interest.

As far as the rest of the cards in the UB sets, I'm certainly not tackling all of them. Still gotta work on all the food cards from the last year or so, as well as all the mutagen cards.
