Basic structure I use for talking-head editing

Basic structure I use for talking-head editing

I put together a simple checklist for my talking-head edits.

My usual workflow is:

• Remove pauses & white spaces

• Enhance voice

• Add visual examples / B-roll

• Hide cuts when needed

• Use subtle zoom cuts

• Add captions / animated words

• Add sound effects

• Add music matching the BPT

• Do colour grading

• Export

Nothing groundbreaking, but having a checklist helps me avoid missing the small things during an edit.

What would you add or change in this workflow?

Motion graphics won’t make your video good. This will.

I’ve been learning that motion graphics can make an edit look better, but they shouldn’t be doing the storytelling for you.

One thing I found useful is asking clients for simple B-roll shots like:

  1. Working on laptop

  2. Coming into office

  3. Drinking coffee

  4. Sitting down

  5. Talking with a friend

  6. Pointing at a monitor

  7. Yelling at the phone

  8. Standing up

  9. Entering your car

  10. Leaving the office

Simple shots like these can give you much more to work with when building the story.

I put the idea into a 2-slide visual.

How much B-roll do you usually ask clients to record?
