Take meds or not?

ADVICE PLEASE! My diagnosing psych said if I get an ECG and urine screen done, he can start prescribing me Vyvanse. I know that meds work great on adhd, but I have some concerns:

  1. I don't want to become dependent on meds - yes I'm struggling without them right now, but I'm scared that once I start taking them I won't ever be able to do anything without them again. I feel like I'll never be able to 'fix' my bad habits (procrastination etc) on my own and just rely on medication forever.

  2. I'm also scared that once I start taking them, my personality and mannerisms will change a lot (because in all honesty, I don't really know what my real personality is since I mask according to the people I'm with) and that will somehow impact my relationships.

  3. Very much a me problem - but I still live with my parents and I haven't told them about my adhd since idk how well they would take it. How would I hide my meds? My mum likes to go through my room to help me keep it tidy (yes this is very lovely) but I'm scared she's gonna find new meds and freak out. I also don't know how I'm gonna go and get the tests done since we're on Life360 and there's no reason for me to go to the GP randomly.

EDIT: I had a few well-meaning comments concerned about this, so I'm gonna put it here: I am an adult, not constantly monitored, it's more about feeling bad making up excuses. They would be asking from a place of genuine curiosity/concern.

Has anyone else had the same concerns but still started medication anyway? How did you overcome the concerns?

My other treatment option is to search for an adhd coach but I'm very much aware that meds are heaps more effective - but again, if anyone has had positive experience with adhd coaching please comment!

Edit: thanks to everyone who commented, I couldn't reply to all of you but please know that all your advice and input is very much appreciated. When I next get the chance, I will be visiting my GP for the tests and then hopefully start medication asap - I have been persuaded in the right direction lol. Hopefully this post can help any others who are in my position!

Got an email for unsubmitted assessment?

Haven't submitted my final assignment yet, got an email from moodle telling me I didn't submit and to contact my course convenor ASAP. I've never gotten this type of email before though, is it common to get it or is this something new?

Also do I need to contact the convenor or not??

Taking medication but still cold

I got diagnosed with hyperthyroidism 2 month ago, then with Grave's disease after that. I've been taking meds for about 3 weeks now and my blood test shows that my T3 and T4 are now normal and TSH increased to 0.18 (x10 higher than before).

Thing is, the reason I went to the doctors in the first place was because I was so extremely cold and the cold intolerance hasn't improved. I did post a while ago on cold intolerance with hyper, and a lot of you said you had the same experience.

Does anyone have experience with thyroid levels improving but symptoms not going away? Especially when they're atypical to the disorder? Or is this something unrelated to the thyroid and I'm just naturally cold?

Does Telecare usually take this long to get things done? (Slight rant)

I was meant to have an appointment with Telecare near the end of June. They cancel on the day, 15 minutes into the waiting room, because the psychiatrist has internet issues. Okay, internet issues happen all the time, I get it. I get told that the booking team will contact me to get me another date - they do not contact me. I wait a week, send them a text. No response. Send them a follow up text the next day, no response. Send them another follow up text 2 days later, no response. So I call them, and guess what? They don't pick up. I leave a voicemail (and I'm a bit frustrated at this point) then they get back to me, and schedule me for an appointment for the end of July (this week).

Well guess what now, the psychiatrist isn't available this week since there's an "unforseen emergency". Again?? They tell me again that they'll contact me, and I'm fully expecting it to take them a week. Has anyone else had this experience with Telecare, and does Dr Lincoln Pauliah even exist? Can I get a refund for pre-paid appointment fees??

I'm only with Telecare because I don't have the time to see an irl psychiatrist, but if they keep making me reschedule the carefully timed appointments I have made then I don't even know what to do anymore. Obviously doctors are allowed to have emergencies, but the admin team is SO frustrating to talk to (mainly cause they won't actually talk to me first). Do they usually take this long to sort stuff out?

How to determine open and closed lexical classes for a language?

Currently doing a project on Fwe (Bantu language, main source is A Grammar of Fwe (2022), Hilde Gunnink). Cannot for the life of me find which lexical classes are open or closed, as it's not stated anywhere. Can a language just not have any open or closed classes? That doesn't seem right.

How do I stop losing things

The worst part of my ADHD has got to be my bad memory. Long story short I've lost something that a friend has entrusted me with (they need it back and it's for a really important project, I was holding onto it for them cause they didn't have a bag that day) and I don't even know where to look for it cause I can't remember.

The last thing I remember was the friend taking it to have a final look and then I don't remember if they even gave it back to me (this probably isn't the case since they asked me where it is), or if I put it in my bag (it was indeed not inside my bag) or if I left it somewhere on a train (I actually hope this is the case cause that means I can at least find it). Mind you, this is YESTERDAY. I can't remember a single thing. I hate this so much and I don't even know how to tell my friend cause I think they'll genuinely hate me for it. How do I even tell them 😭

Does anyone have any tips on how to stop forgetting/losing things, or otherwise a really good technique to bring back my memory? I already block important things in my calendar, but for things like this where I physically lose something, I have no clue what to even do.

Edit: thanks everyone who commented! I couldn't reply to everything but your tips are truly appreciated. I guess all that's left for me to do is come clean to my friend and apologise, and buy some airtags

Hyperthyroidism with hypo symptoms?

Hi I recently got a blood test done and got diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. This was really surprising bc I did expect a thyroid issue but for it to be hypothyroidism, cause I had barely any hyper symptoms and nearly all the hypo symptoms, the most pronounced being cold intolerance.

I do have family history - my mum had hypothyroidism but experienced mostly hyper symptoms, which I think might be related. My bloods confused the dr too so I'll be doing another blood test in a month, but I wanted to ask if anyone else has had this kind of experience + if so, what was the outcome/final diagnosis?

If it helps, my TSH was 1.7 and T4 was 22.2, T3 was 6.1. No other chronic conditions.

Edit: Thanks everyone who shared advice, hopefully I can figure things out more when I get another blood test done in a month.

Can an underage sibling be your collateral?

Hey everyone, I've booked an upcoming assessment with Telecare (they had good reviews) and the confirmation sms had a link for a collateral to answer a questionnaire about my symptoms.

Now, I don't know about you peoole, but I am not telling my parents about this. They're typical Asian parents when it comes to mental health (iykyk) and honestly I'm just scared that it'll turn into a massive fight because I would be paying $750 (with my own money) and they'll think it's a waste.

So the only person I have left to turn to is my sister, she will be turning 16. For reference I am 20, she knows about how much I struggle with my ADHD symptoms and actually told me I need a diagnosis for both myself and our family. So she'd be down to fill out the questionnaire, my only concern is that it won't be accepted if the psych found out it was from a minor, especially one who isn't even 16 yet?

Has anyone else had this experience, or do you recomme nd I just look for someone else? I do have friends who've known me from childhood but I don't think they ever got to see me like how I behave at home, which is where my symptoms are most pronounced.
