Thyroid problems are so sneaky

One day you’re fine… then suddenly you’re always tired, gaining weight, losing hair, feeling moody, and wondering why your body feels “off.”

I seriously thought stress was causing everything until I got my thyroid checked.

Anyone else got diagnosed way later than they should have?

Tiny TR4 nodule but they don’t recommend follow up? 😭

These are my thyroid ultrasound results.

Impression
Diffusely heterogeneous and hypervascular thyroid suggesting thyroiditis. Overall thyroid is top-normal to mildly enlarged.
TI-RADS category 4 partially calcified right thyroid nodule measuring 0.3 cm for which no routine follow-up is recommended. Consider follow-up if clinically warranted
The American College of Radiology TI-RADS committee's white paper recommendations for thyroid lesions classified as TR4 are listed below:
> than or equal to 1.0 cm. Follow-up ultrasound in 1, 2, 3, and 5 years.
> than or equal to 1.5 cm. FNA.

FINDINGS:
Right thyroid measures 5.3 x 1.5 x 1.2 cm and the left measures 4.5 x 1.4 × 1.6 cm. Isthmus measures 0.4 cm in AP dimension. Thyroid is top-normal to mildly enlarged and mildly heterogeneous in echogenicity.
The thyroid vascularity is elevated. There is a hypoechoic nodule with echogenic macrocalcification involving the right thyroid measuring 0.3 × 0.3 × 0.3 cm, TI-RADS category 4.

Why aren’t they recommending follow-up for the nodule? I understand it doesn’t meet the requirements but how will I ever know if it grows/is cancer. 😭 please help me, have any of you had a TR4 nodule this small that was cancerous?

Is it hypothyroidism?

Hi guys,

I’ve been gaining weight over the past year. It’s not too much. I gained 10 kgs in just over a year. I mostly eat healthy and exercise/walk/swim so I’d say I’ve somewhat of an active lifestyle.

When I noticed weight increasing, I cut down a lot of unhealthy eating and started exercising more but instead of reducing I gained another 5 kgs!!

Now I got my blood tests done and TSH is 3.42. I’ve read posts that it differs throughout the day and mine was done at 7 pm. The report says it’s normal. However, other tests shows iron and vitamin D deficiency.

I have hypothyroidism in my family. I’ve always maintained my weight so increasing all of a sudden doesn’t make sense to me. For a long time, I believed it was my eating habits but improving those habits don’t work either.

There were other things like Ferritin was 23. Vitamin b12 was 180.

What do you all suggest? My mental health has been a mess. My periods are heavier than usual. I feel extremely tired at the end of the day and after workout. I have sleeping issues. My skin is so dry. My face has so much puffiness and I bloat so much after eating. B

Upcoming left lobectomy

Hi all! I (32f) have had a nodule on my left lobe for about 5 years of so. I’ve had an ultrasound a couple times and finally got in to see an endocrinologist. Endo said because the nodule is approximately 6cm and is causing swallowing and breathing trouble and a bit of nerve compression, I have to have a biopsy and then a lobectomy. The biopsy is scheduled for the beginning of June and the surgery is supposed to be done by the end of June. I am, understandably, nervous about this whole series of events and so I was hoping you guys would have some ideas of questions I should ask my surgeon at the consultation.

Second Opinion

I had a thyroid US today. My right side is visibly larger and I have swollen lymph nodes near by. There is a mass under 10mm that had blood flow. The radiologist report red everything is fine. Should I get a 2nd opinion?

Autonomic nervous system panicking

For a few weeks now I have been struck with panic attacks and anxiety like symptoms, suffocation, tachycardia, palpitations, and just a debilitating physical feeling. The thing is though that I feel fine mentally. My body is just having these reactions either at random or when doing any physical exertion, sometimes after eating. I've also had twitchy muscles and there was one day it was mildly cold out, yet my shiver response was insanely strong. I've never had anything like this before and am wondering if maybe thyroid is involved.

My levels are technically in the normal range, have had multiple tests lately with TSH between 3.8-4.1 and T4 at 1.3. I decided to compare it to a test I had years ago and even then it was still kind of high at 3.5. I don't know if this small rise could explain all of my problems, but I'm not sure where else to look. My doctor heard my symptoms and the first thing she suggested was a thyroid check, but she reported my thyroid results were fine so she put me on benzos. To her credit, the benzos helped my episodes a lot so I'll probably transition to a long term anxiety treatment.

But anyways, do these symptoms correlate with hypothyroidism? And could TSH levels like mine still be problematic?

TT, PMDD and Kyleena IUD

Hi, I (34F) had a TT 6 years ago and we had a lot of issues to find the right dosage for me. I spent like 6 months in hyper and felt like shit, panic attacks and insomnia. Then we got it right (125 μg levothyroxine). I felt really good for a few months except my PMDD. SSRI don't work on me so I was suggested the IUD, the smaller dosage so Kyleena. I have it since August 25. The first 3 months were shit but I finally adapted.

But ever since, my TSH levels keep rising and rising. We upped the dosage twice (+5μg each time) and it keeps rising. I've gained 6 kg since December, and I also have some hormones related issues like a specific type of headache that keeps coming back, and a lot of sore boobs issues, really painful.

I wonder if the Kyleena IUD is the cause of the TSH rising and rising.

And I also fear that if I get it removed, i'll go back to a too high of a dose and start feel like shit again.

And also that the pmdd will come back with a revenge.

Did anybody else experience something like that ?

Anybody has any advices ?

Thanks ✨

My thyroid bloods are as follows:

Antibodies 6.6 (normal).

Anyone know what to make of this?

Thyroid US tomorrow

I had a thyroid ultrasound 12 years ago. Right side more enlarged than left. My isthmus is 5mm mildly thicker. I had a 9mm complex nodule on my left. I have enlarged lymph nodes and now my right side is noticeably bigger. I never really gave my thyroid much thought until now and I’m noticing some ear pain on the right side when I look down. Worried what they’ll find tomorrow. How common our thyroidectomy?

3 days post-op TT

Had a total thyroidectomy done 3 days ago. And just wanted to share if anyone is in the trenches

Surgery was 3 hours, I was kept one night at the hospital for observations

First night home was very hard coz of only oral pain killers.

The pain is not bad at the incision area but it’s definitely very bad and uncomfortable at the back of my neck. (I guess it’s coz of how they keep you during the surgery)

Sleeping in propped up position for the first few days is ideal, although my surgeon cleared me to sleep in any position I’m comfortable in. Swallowing is getting better.

Because of the intubation tube, you may have cough and phlegm for the first 4-5 days post surgery. Sipping on something hot helps else it hurts to cough.

Anyone has any questions, I’m happy to answer

Good luck to anyone in the same position

How can it not be related?

Went to my primary because I’ve gained 30 lbs in 4 months, keep having panic attacks (very new), extreme daytime fatigue, bad constipation, and my whole body seems starved for hydration despite the large volume of water I drink (sometimes adding LMNT for sodium). I eat healthy and have a fairly active lifestyle. My levels are great, but I’m going to call Monday and see if I can get a copy of them and find out what exactly they tested. However. In the last few months, I have grown a 4cm nodule on the remaining half of my thyroid. It is one if 3 nodules, but the biggest by far. The right side was removed years ago because it kept regrowing a large cyst, no matter how many times we drained it. Saw the ENT today and he said it meeds to come out because it’s too large. I’m nervous about being on medication, primarily because my levels show normal and I feel like crap, so what if it gets worse after they remove it? The only thing I can find online that it may be mimicking is perimenopause as all other options would affect my consistently good labs. Anyone have any experience with anything like this? How can my levels be so normal with only half a thyroid and something so abnormal and large growing on the remaining side?

What's the best company to go with an for at-home TSH self-test kit?

I may need T3-3, T-4, etc in the future but for now, only TSH testing, that's accurate and easy to follow online as needed.

Subclincal Hyperthyroidism and celiac disease or other autoimmune disease

I have been tested a few times over the past few years and this latest result came back strange because I was previously going in the upper direction TSH:

Serum TSH level
0.124 mU/L
The reference range is between 0.570 and 3.600 mU/L.
Serum free T4 level
9.5 pmol/L
The reference range is between 7.9 and 14.0 pmol/L.

The dr said it was most likely pre-Hashimotos, related to celiac disease. I have no energy and a tightness on my right side of neck.

Does anyone have experience of a low TSH and low normal T4 before Hashimotos diagnosis? I have to wait 8 weeks before another full test.

30f fear of thyroid health

hi yall,

this may be kinda dumb to some. i deal with extreme health anxiety. i’m talking i’ve never had bloodwork, and haven’t been to any doctor other than the gyno in the past 12 years. my dad has graves, and his sister was just diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

i am so concerned because i was feeling my neck and on the front if i tilt my head all the way back i think i feel my thyroid. i’m worried because im like okay.. so it’s possible i’ve gone 12 years without checking something important. i have no other symptoms, no lumps really that i can feel. i just feel stupid and scared and i don’t even know if this is right to be posting here.

i have an appointment with a psychiatrist monday, and have reached out to a doctor for a referral for bloodwork (i literally don’t know how this works)

2nd Thyroid Ultrasound

Hey everyone! I’m not looking for a diagnosis or anything like that but I just want to see if anyone has had similar issues?

Little back story: we have been keeping an eye on my thyroid since I was 15 (I am now 24) due to my thyroid always appearing large. Last year I had an ultrasound and they found that my thyroid had a nodule on the right side.

Size: Right lobe - 4.6 x 1.6cm Left lobe - 4.6 x 1.6cm Isthmus - 0.2cm
Nodule - 5mm solid appearing hypoechoic

Since they found that I have had a lot of health issues. I developed gallstones that caused chronic gastritis and had to be removed, I’ve developed obsessive behaviors that started last year, chronic diarrhea, my hair is thinning (including my eyebrows and eyelashes), I cannot gain weight (I’ve lost over 50lbs in a year), heat sensitivity, ears popping when I swallow, chronic cough with hoarseness, constantly tired even though I get a good 7-8hr of sleep, my short term memory has absolutely deteriorated, my brain feels foggy and I can’t make it better, it has been a year of absolute hell.

On my most recent ultrasound they found more nodules.
Size: Right lobe- 4.5 x 1.5 x 1.6 cm Left lobe - 4.5 x 1 x 1.5 cm Isthmus - 0.2 cm
Findings: Multiple partially solid and cystic bilateral thyroid nodules with the largest on the right measuring 0.7 × 0.7 cm and the largest in the left measuring 0.3 x
2.2 cm.
(Sorry for the weird format I saw a different ultrasound place this time)

I have not seen an endocrinologist yet because my PCP has not seen the findings yet due to the results popping up on my patient portal after 5pm. (I’m a terrible patient to have lol)

Has anyone had similar issues? Can thyroid issues affect your GI system?
Sorry for the long post and I just wanna state again that I am not looking for a diagnosis. Thank you for taking the time to read this!

Hyperthyroid- hot nodules - no med-no surgery- yet

Who else has fought not taking meds, or not had surgery? What was your outcome?
My Timeline:
2009 diagnosed with nodules with biopsies done and ok. Normal labs. No autoimmune.
2019- TSH tanked with subclinical symptoms
(Note: my father had just died and so under stress)
Dr put me on methimazole - it didn’t agree with me, bloated, moody, over all worse.
2021- RFA on hot nodules. Ended up with partial vocal cord paralysis due to procedure. One nodule had shrank. tSH slowly increased to subclinical.
Each year I have ultrasounds.
2026: Current: one nodule increased by 54 percent so at biopsy percentage. So will have that done. Not sure if I would do surgery at this point and risk my other vocal cord.
But Dr wants me on twice a week meds again, to prevent afib. I have no signs of any afib currently. Heart rate is great (Apple Watch monitored) No hyperthyroid symptoms.
Any thoughts?

Supplements

Just recently diagnosed hypothyroidism. My numbers weren’t crazy and the lowest dose of levo is what I am on. My socials have been bombarded with natural supplements that help with liver health and managing your symptoms even while on meds. Anyone have anything that worked for them?
