Doc says I can decide .. but I can’t - what would y do?

Hi, I got my thyroid completely removed in February this year and fighting the “hormone” game now. Due to bad timing of all of this stuff (just became first time dad in fall 2025… want to focus on that and not thyroid stuff), I really want to get my energy level back.

I am on 125 LT for 3 months now and have the usual hypo symptoms plus some extra tiered eyes.
Current blood work:
- TSH through the roof and rising for the last months
- Ft4 mid-range
- Ft3 complete low range

(Bloodwork after 1 and 2 month of 125LT was always high ft4 and low ft3, after 3 month now fT4 came down for the first time)

Doc says: guidlines tell to upgrade the LT dose to 137 or even more, cause TSH so high and Iam quite bulky (85kg male), but the low ft3 might be responsible for the TSH, so adding that could also work. I can decide now … great.

So iam reading all the stuff I can find and will also now ask the good’ol Reddit for an opinion :)

Tldr:
3 months of 125LT
- TSH through the roof and rising for the last months
- Ft4 mid-range
- Ft3 complete low range

Doc says we can up to 137LT or add T3 .. he gives me the Choice … opinions?

Has anyone managed to reduce thyroid nodules?

About 6 months ago, thyroid nodules were found during an ultrasound. My doctor told me not to treat them and just monitor them.
At that time, I was focusing on correcting iron deficiency and improving my overall health. Since then, I’ve completely changed my diet and lifestyle. My thyroid antibody levels have dropped significantly (TgAb: 17 → 2, TPOAb: 16 → 1), but the nodules are still there.
I recently spoke with a doctor who suggested focusing on gut health rather than treating the nodules directly. He also recommended avoiding dairy for a while, so I’m trying that and plan to repeat my tests in a few months.
Has anyone here had thyroid nodules become smaller or even disappear? What helped in your experience

Both tsh and t4 are slightly high.

I recently got a thyroid panel done for my mental health and the psy didnt mention anything about the results. On the 27 April : tsh 3.880 mIU/L. t4 24.7 pmol/L.

Then on the 25 june : tsh 5.150 mIU/L. t4 23.2 pmol/L.

I have noticed nausea, diarrhea and fatigue but everything else is normal.

Do i go see a doctor or will the levels go back to normal on their own?

Goiter… awaiting results

Hi all.

Uk based female… Two weeeks ago a GP friend pulled me aside and told me I have a goiter.

I’d never heard of it before. I’ve been to the Doctor I have three weeks until my ultrasound and biopsy.

I swing from feeling casual about it to absolutely sheer panic/ shitting myself. Especially when I read about surgeries and cancer.

Im also a singer, and a public speaker. My voice is a huge part of who I am. And I’m scared.

So, Im wondering what I can do to help myself in the meanwhile.

I have read on here about iodine insufficiencies.. I don’t know of thats come up yet in my bloods. (I had them last week, only one thing came up borderline and it was something to do with the size of my cells)

Anyway- would it be worthwhile taking iodine supplements in the mean time? Can that shrink the goiter?

Thanks all.

41M thyroid nodule + lymph node found incidentally

Hey all, hoping someone with more experience can help me make sense of this while I wait for my biopsy.
Background: I’m 41M, no symptoms really, this all started because I had dry eye and went to an ophthalmologist, who suggested checking my thyroid antibodies. Turns out I have autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto’s probably, my mom has a multinodular goiter too). TSH and FT4 are normal, but anti-TG (268) and anti-TPO (432) are both elevated.
The ultrasound showed:
Thyroid is diffusely enlarged and heterogeneous overall (typical thyroiditis pattern, I’m told)

A nodule on the left lobe: ~15.6 x 14.5 x 29.7mm, described as having “ill-defined margins” and calcifications both on the rim and inside the nodule

A lymph node in the left neck (level II): ~6.7 x 10.8 x 19.2mm, described as “heterogeneous”, a couple other smaller similar nodes nearby too

No mention of any abnormal blood flow, cystic changes, or bright echogenic foci in the lymph node specifically, just “heterogeneous.”
Calcitonin came back negative, so I’m told medullary thyroid cancer is off the table.
They’ve scheduled an FNA (fine needle aspiration) of both the nodule AND the lymph node for July 15th.
I know nobody here can diagnose me and the biopsy is really the only thing that’ll tell me anything for sure. But based on the ultrasound description alone (margins + calcifications on the nodule, that lymph node size/location)…does this sound like a “probably fine, just being thorough” workup, or does it sound like they’re genuinely concerned? Trying to gauge how much to worry for the next two weeks. Thanks for reading this far.

Suddenly Visible Thyroid

My doctor is acting like it's no big deal because all tests have come out normal. I had a sore throat one morning and my thyroid was suddenly very visible. All thyroid blood tests came back normal. Ultrasound shows not enlarged and no nodules. I am so confused, why would it suddenly jut out for zero reason?

Doctor recommends total thyroidectomy for a benign nodule

Hi I’m a 20 year old woman and I have a single 3.3 cm thyroid nodule. The FNA biopsy came back benign, but my endocrinologist recommends a total thyroidectomy because he says the nodule will keep growing and if only the nodule is removed, it will come back. Has anyone been in a similar situation?

Need advice on full Thyroidectomy on potential cancerous nodules

My partner, F33, had an ultrasound 3 months ago which showed several nodules on both left and right lobes.

On the right lobe, theres a small nodule measuring 0.5cm x 0.3cm described as “anechoic with internal isoechoic material inside” (mostly fluid filled with some solid material), internal blood flow, classed as TI-RADS TR2 (not suspicious). Also there are a few other tiny cysts which are usually bening.

On the left lobe, there are 4 nodules containing fluid with some internal material.

- 1.2 x 0.7cm

- 0.4 x 0.2cm

- 0.4 x 0.2cm

- And the largest is 1.3cm x 0.6cm

The largest nodule is the most concerning, it appears solid with an irregular shape and tiny cystic spaces and classed as a TI-RADS TR4 (moderately suspicious) with internal vascularity. There were also multiple benign-looking lymph nodes in the neck, but none suspicious.

A FNA cytology biopsy was recommended on the suspicious nodules, which was painful.

Nodule 1 came back Betheda II (bening) and Nodule 2 came back Bethesda III (Atypia of Undetermined Significance with nuclear atypia - AUSN). In the report it suggested repeat FNA or molecular testing may be helpful if clinically indicated.

Since then my partner has been terrified that theres cancer there. We’ve been to 2 specialists to explain the results. First one was reasonable in my eyes, explaining what the results mean, what were the significance of Bethesda II and III, the chances of cancer. The options he gave us was total Thyroidectomy, take out just the left lobe or do more testing in 3 months time to see if the nodules have changed in any way. We decide to wait and test.

The second ultrasound was over the weekend, but because she has been so scared these few months that it’s constantly on her mind, so she decided to see another specialist before then. This guy looked at the same results and recommended getting a full Thyroidectomy of BOTH lobes and wants to do it as soon as possible.

That blew my mind that he could be so decisive about it. We got the second ultrasound which showed no change in size in both nodules and I spoke to him about it, he still had the same opinion - get rid of all of it. That has left me flabbergasted, iv done some reading and I see loads of problems people have when removing ALL of their Thyroids. Of course some people have had it removed and haven’t had an issue taking medication for the rest of their lives but the majority of what Iv read is the opposite. My own personal opinion is that we should do more testing, maybe molecular testing that we haven’t done yet and then if possible save the right lobe.

The thing is that its been playing on my partner’s mind and I understand. She wants to take the second doctors opinion and just get rid of it if its a problem. She doesn’t want it hanging over her. I can understand her but I dont think its the right course of action, why not save one lobe if you can? I dont think she’s thinking about the possible long term potential consequences.

Id really love some advice from people who have gone through this and seen the consequences firsthand. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I had a biopsy on two thyroid nodules performed today

I swear it was one of the worst things I’ve ever experienced in my 28 years of living.
Thank God my husband was there to hold my hand bc the pressure and pain deep inside my throat was super intense and uncomfortable.
Plus, my husband said on all times (8 times) the only thing the came from the needle was a clear fluid. No blood. Is it a good sign?
One nodule was 1,8cm trad5 and the other 1,4cm trad4

Subacute Thyroiditis: How long did your hypo phase last?

Hi. For those of you who were diagnosed with subacute thyroiditis, how long did you stay in the hypothyroid phase?
I thought I was done with the thyroid issues, but I’ve just entered it.
I had 8 weeks of hyperthyroidism, then my thyroid levels returned to normal. Now I’ve become hypothyroid. I was hoping I’d permanently recovered and would be among the percentage of people who don’t go through this stage.
Also, if you’re an athlete or work out regularly and use a wearable, did you notice your HRV worsen or improve during this time?

Thyroid Ultrasound

Hi everyone, my ENT noticed I had an enlarged thyroid and sent me in for an ultrasound. One of the nodules seems suspicious despite the interpretation stating no follow up is needed. The doctor is eventually supposed to call me to go over the results. What kinds of questions should I be asking?

My thyroid levels haven’t been taken since I was pregnant so I’d at least ask for a blood draw. 7 months postpartum now.

What to eat post lobectomy

Subacute Thyroiditis

I’ve been having pain from subacute thyroiditis since the end of May. Is there really nothing anyone can do for it? You just have to wait it out/manage the pain? I just finished a 15 day course of prednisone and now the pain is back again, so bad!! I can’t stand it. How long does the pain phase last?? 😭😭😭😭 I need some encouragement and I just needed to vent.

Life after Thyroidectomy

I'm 5+ years post TT due to PTC. I've been in senior management and was always an independent, quick thinking take charge kind of person. But now I just don't seem to be that same person. It's difficult to focus and concentrate. I just don't have the work ethic I once had. Luckily I'm near retirement. I just can't tell if I feel like this due to lack of a thyroid or just normal aging. Anyone else relate?

Thyroid nodule mri

They have found a thyroid nodule measuring 3.6 cm. The doctor is ordering an MRI instead of a biopsy. Why is that? They have done an ultrasound already. Doctor didn’t tell me the reason why the MRI is being ordered first. Please help

large multinodular goitre, swallowing problems, possible aspiration, and no clear plan

tl;dr: 25F with worsening neck swelling, fatigue, swallowing issues, chest pain, vision problems, and dizziness. Imaging shows a large multinodular goitre compressing nearby structures and possible aspiration-related lung infection, but thyroid labs are normal. No clear treatment plan yet—seeking similar experiences and advice.

I am 25F and currently sitting in hospital writing this because I feel completely lost.

Around four years ago, I went to hospital with sudden swelling around my thyroid/neck. It felt like I had swallowed a golf ball while being choked. Eating and drinking were painful, and I could not lie flat. After a few days the swelling settled enough for me to go home.

This has happened about four times over the years. Each time I went to hospital because I did not have ongoing thyroid problems between episodes. I had blood tests and scans as an outpatient, but nothing major was found and it was often put down to my tonsils.

In September last year, I started becoming very lethargic. I had random swelling throughout my body and joint pain. My doctor initially thought it may be iron-related, but my symptoms continued and gradually worsened.

At the start of this year my periods became irregular, my sex drive disappeared, and I developed migraines/pressure headaches mainly on the right side. I had blood tests, but they were said to be normal. I was advised to focus on diet and exercise, which I was already doing. I also started seeing an exercise physiologist and dietitian.

About two months ago, I noticeably declined. I became more exhausted, had worsening swelling, my periods stopped, anxiety became severe, and I felt dazed often. I also developed poor depth perception, chest pain, an ear-infection-like feeling, itching, a hoarse voice, feeling cold, pins and needles in my hands and feet, and cold/flu-like symptoms.

I went back to my doctor, who began checking my thyroid. My blood tests were reportedly normal, including a TSH of 0.5.

About three weeks ago I developed difficulty swallowing, pressure around the nerves to my eye and ear, trouble turning my head to the left, blurred vision and white lights in my right eye when standing, and severe discomfort lying flat. I felt more chest pain and what felt like blood-flow pressure in my neck/head.

My doctor ordered a thyroid ultrasound, more blood tests and an ECG.

Ten days ago I returned for the results. By then I was barely able to eat or drink without pain and coughing. I was so exhausted that I was only getting out of bed to use the toilet, and when I stood up I felt so dazed that my husband had to help me.

The first ultrasound showed:

Right thyroid lobe: 62 × 28 × 28 mm

Right-sided nodule: 33 × 23 × 24 mm

Left thyroid lobe: 59 × 33 × 34 mm

Left-sided nodule: 16 × 20 × 17 mm

My blood pressure was normal, but when I stood my heart rate increased to around 130 and my right right puple is more constricted. My doctor sent me to hospital, where I am now.

Since being admitted, I have had a video fluoroscopy swallow study. It showed I could swallow, but the smallest amount went toward my vocal cords first and I needed a double swallow to get things down.

A CT scan then showed a right upper-lung chest infection, thought to possibly be aspiration pneumonitis. It also showed that my thyroid is mildly pressing on my oesophagus and carotid artery, with possible compression of the sympathetic chain.

I also got a laryngoscopy that showed my right vocal cords weren't moving fully.

At first, the team said I could go home if I wanted because they did not feel another ultrasound was needed. My husband and mum asked them to investigate further because I was not improving.

The following day, another ultrasound showed:

Right thyroid lobe: 6.1 × 3 × 3 cm, volume 29 cc

Left thyroid lobe: 7.4 × 3.5 × 2.8 cm, volume 38 cc

Isthmus: 1.1 cm deep

Left upper nodule: 19 × 18 × 18 mm

Left lower nodule: 20 × 12 × 11 mm

Right upper nodule: 12 × 7 × 5 mm

It also says there are innumerable nodules throughout both thyroid lobes, my thyroid extends down behind my breastbone, and the overall conclusion is a large multinodular goitre.

All of my blood tests are apparently still normal.

They are still investigating, but there is no clear plan yet. The discussion keeps returning to whether home would be better and that they do not “just cut people open.” I want to be clear that I have not demanded surgery. I just need someone to explain what is causing the decline and how I am meant to safely eat, drink, take medication, and stand up without becoming so unwell.

I am still struggling to eat and drink, take medication, lie flat, and stand without feeling dazed and having my heart rate jump. I feel worse each day.

Has anyone experienced a large multinodular goitre with normal thyroid blood tests but severe swallowing, neck pressure, chest, vision, or standing symptoms? What investigations or specialist input helped you get a proper plan?

Thyroidectomy

I just had the right side of my thyroid removed, because of a 3cm mass. This was a week ago. They couldn't determine if it was cancerous with FNA, so I am waiting for the final results on the mass. My doctor said if it is cancerous the next step would be to remove the other half. From what I've researched and read it is a small chance of cancer occurring on the half that wasn't removed. I'm just worried about removing my entire thyroid, especially after reading about symptoms and how your body adjusts to no thyroid. I have depression, which is now under control, but I've read/heard that that can worsen after thyroid removal. I know thyroid medication isn't that complicated. Has anyone decided to leave the other half even after cancer on the removed half? Do you have any pointers or advice? Thank you!
