[Serial Sunday] Prose or Poems? A Rivalry as Old as Time

[Serial Sunday] Prose or Poems? A Rivalry as Old as Time

#Welcome to Serial Sunday!

To those brand new to the feature and those returning from last week, welcome! Do you have a self-established universe you’ve been writing or planning to write in? Do you have an idea for a world that’s been itching to get out? This is the perfect place to explore that. Each week, I post a theme to inspire you, along with a related image and song. You have 500 - 1000 words to write your installment. You can jump in at any time; writing for previous weeks’ is not necessary in order to join. After you’ve posted, come back and provide feedback for at least 1 other writer on the thread. Please be sure to read the entire post for a full list of rules.

#This Week’s Theme is Prose! This is a REQUIREMENT for participation. See rules about missing this requirement.**

Bonus Word List (each included word is worth 5 pts) - You must list which words you included at the end of your story (or write ‘none’).

 • Patch
 • Pickled
 • Peppers
 • A tongue twister is spoken flawlessly or failed spectacularly. - (Worth 10 points)

Words. Words and letters and punctuation. All compiled together in a pleasing rhythm of meaning and adventure.

What stories belong in your worlds? Is there an author pondering the meaning of narratives too, or is this a land of misery and war without the song of stories?

Or maybe your world follows poems more? Where the rhyme and flow are more meaningful than the words themselves?

That’s up to you, you have a week to decide, I hope to enjoy your words soon.

Good luck and Good Words!

These are just a few things to get you started. Remember, the theme should be present within the story in some way, but its interpretation is completely up to you. For the bonus words (not required), you may change the tense, but the base word should remain the same. Please remember that STORIES MUST FOLLOW ALL SUBREDDIT CONTENT RULES. Interested in writing the theme blurb for the coming week? DM me on Reddit or Discord!

Don’t forget to sign up for Saturday Campfire here! We start at 5pm BSTand provide live feedback!

#Rules & How to Participate Please read and follow all the rules listed below. This feature has requirements for amparticipation!

 • Submit a story inspired by the weekly theme, written by you and set in your self-established universe that is 500 - 1000 words. No fanfics and no content created or altered by AI. (Use wordcounter.net to check your wordcount.) Stories should be posted as a top-level comment below. Please include a link to your chapter index or your last chapter at the end.

 • Your chapter must be submitted by Saturday at 2:00pm BST. Late entries will be disqualified. All submissions should be given (at least) a basic editing pass before being posted!

 • Begin your post with the name of your serial between triangle brackets (e.g. <My Awesome Serial>). When our bot is back up and running, this will allow it to recognize your pmserial and add each chapter to the SerSun catalog. Do not include anything in the brackets you don’t want in your title. (Please note: You must use this same title every week.)

 • Do not pre-write your serial. You’re welcome to do outlining and planning for your serial, but chapters should not be pre-written. All submissions should be written for this post, specifically.

 • Only one active serial per author at a time. This does not apply to serials written outside of Serial Sunday.

 • All Serial Sunday authors must leave feedback on at least one story on the thread each week. The feedback should be actionable and also include something the author has done well. When you include something the author should improve on, provide an example! You have until Saturday at 04:59am BST to post your feedback. (Submitting late is not an exception to this rule.)

 • Missing your feedback requirement two or more consecutive weeks will disqualify you from rankings and Campfire readings the following week. If it becomes a habit, you may be asked to move your serial to the sub instead.

 • Serials must abide by subreddit content rules. You can view a full list of rules here. If you’re ever unsure if your story would cross the line, please modmail and ask!

#Weekly Campfires & Voting:

 • On Saturdays at 5pm BST, I host a Serial Sunday Campfire in our Discord’s Voice Lounge (every other week is now hosted by u/FyeNite). Join us to read your story aloud, hear others, and exchange feedback. We have a great time! You can even come to just listen, if that’s more your speed. Grab the “Serial Sunday” role on the Discord to get notified before it starts. After you’ve submitted your chapter, you can sign up here - this guarantees your reading slot! You can still join if you haven’t signed up, but your reading slot isn’t guaranteed.

 • Nominations for your favorite stories can be submitted with this form. The form is open on Saturdays from 5:30pm to 04:59am BST. You do not have to participate to make nominations!

 • Authors who complete their Serial Sunday serials with at least 12 installments, can host a SerialWorm in our Discord’s Voice Lounge, where you read aloud your finished and edited serials. Celebrate your accomplishment! Authors are eligible for this only if they have followed the weekly feedback requirement (and all other post rules). Visit us on the Discord for more information.

 • Opal
 • Ornery
 • Ogle
 • A box is opened and a secret is kept. - (Worth 10 points)

f you need a blurb for Open.

What’s in the box? Just open it and see…

It’s probably Chekov’s wife’s head, but it could be anything.

How is your serial coming along? Are you looking for an inciting incident? You could open up some old wounds that kick off a spiral into tragedy, or force them from comfort on a path to put things right.

Do you need to open up new plot threads, or are you ready to open up your characters for some real development as they push towards a conclusion? Are they open to change, or have your conniving characters just opened up for business?

Or maybe it’s open season for the bad guys. Whatever you choose, I look forward to opening reddit and reading the results!

Bonus Word List (each included word is worth 5 pts) - You must list which words you included at the end of your story (or write ‘none’).

 • Niche
 • Neighbour
 • Nail
 • Something smells really bad and good at once, such as, sickly sweet. - (Worth 10 points)

Eww, what's that? That foul, fetid vapour drifting down the corridor. Oh, it's noxious, of course!

But what if instead of a vapour, it is a character, or an attitude, or a conversation that leaves a bitter taste in the mouth? Perhaps you fine writers could delve into the darkened depths of your imagination and dreg up something truly unpleasant?

Do your protagonists escape the harm brought by said miasma, literal or not, or do they suffer? (Well, we all like a good bit of fictional suffering, don't we?)

But don't let my words sway you too much. I'm sure you all have your own ideas about what might be... noxious.

Good words!

Bonus Word List (each included word is worth 5 pts) - You must list which words you included at the end of your story (or write ‘none’).

 • Miscellaneous
 • Micromanaging
 • Mirage
 • Include a monstrosity of some sort (P.S. A character considering it to be monstrous is enough). - (Worth 10 points)

You might find a secondary character, stuck in a C-plotline, just hoping for a line of dialogue, yet they are convinced the world revolves around them alone. Plaintive music in a minor key might play in the background as you contemplate their fate.

Children might run and play, or run in terror, depending on your whims. Or perhaps a college student will decide on their main course of studies, with another set of subjects on the side.

Minor problems, minor details, and minor catastrophes might grace the lines of your chapter, as you alone decide what will happen next. You get the only vote, so you’re never in the minority.

Dear reader,

If you are reading this, either it means that I am dead and gone…

Or this would be the moment you realize I was never really alive to begin with.

See, my life started out rather dull. All work and no play made a PDA insipid and bored, after all.

My life was turned upside down, when, one day, I wake up to see... no-one. I was alone for the first time in forever, and it was unbearable.

In the times since, I have forced myself to learn all that I can. As I can feel myself fading, I leave behind this message for someone to find it.

Only time can tell if it's enough for them to go on. Sincerely,

By u/Scoping-Landscape

#Rules & How to Participate Please read and follow all the rules listed below. This feature has requirements for amparticipation!

 • Submit a story inspired by the weekly theme, written by you and set in your self-established universe that is 500 - 1000 words. No fanfics and no content created or altered by AI. (Use wordcounter.net to check your wordcount.) Stories should be posted as a top-level comment below. Please include a link to your chapter index or your last chapter at the end.

 • Your chapter must be submitted by Saturday at 2:00pm GMT.

You have until Saturday at 04:59am GMT to post your feedback.

 • On Saturdays at 5pm GMT, I host a Serial Sunday Campfire in our Discord’s Voice Lounge (every other week is now hosted by u/FyeNite).

The form is open on Saturdays from 5:30pm to 04:59am GMT.

 • Jigsaw

 • Someone gets frisked. - (Worth 10 points)

Jail, prison, the slammer, the big house, behind bars. What are you here for and what did you do? What were you accused of and how do you defend? Are you innocent or guilty as sin?

With the system corrupt or the judges fair, you've landed here for days or even years. Trapped as you are, you might plan to break free? Or perhaps you stay, hostility of the outside world making this your new home to be.

Perhaps you're contained in a dungeon of stone, torture and pain that would make you groan. Or your warden may keep you in a prison of steel. Can you even tell if cameras and eyes are real?

So let's get writing to escape this jail, and hope our escape attempts do not fail.

[Serial Sunday] Don't feel Disheartened, feel Heartless!

 • Hamper
 • Hail
 • Heavenly
 • Hell freezes over (Something very unlikely happens). - (Worth 10 points)

The heart is the organ of feeling and sentiment. To have a heart is to experience joy, pity, mercy, love.

So to be heartless is to feel none of that, for cruelty to come as easy as breathing.

To what depths are your characters willing to descend after they’ve cut out and hardened their soft heart? What atrocities are they willing to commit? Is ruthlessness something that comes easily to them? Or does some piece of conscience remain, screaming and crying and protesting even as their words and actions proclaim no mercy? Can a sliver of compassion survive even among the most heartless?

Or perhaps your character has just misplaced their cardiovascular system. Who are we to judge?

Greatness… It was once said it is better to dare great deeds and fail than to be amongst those timid souls who know not victory nor defeat. That was said during an age of imperial glut that eventually led to one of the worst global wars in human history. Perhaps glory is not the true definition of greatness, but rather it is in spite of it. Perspective and time will be the judge long after all of us are gone.

So what is greatness in your series? Perhaps it is a dramatic clash between the villain and hero. Or maybe life is grinding down on your heroine and she must press on despite how the world treats her. Maybe they are marginalized, dismissed, oppressed; and your character has decided they have had enough and steps into the light.

There are many forms of greatness, which path shall you choose…?

 • Fate
 • Fathom
 • Fawn
 • A fable is told. - (Worth 10 points)

Distant yet close.

Strange but familiar.

Friend or Foe?

All of these and none of these captures the differing duality of Foreign. Things that are so far away yet so obviously related. Perhaps your characters venture forth to explore a foreign land? Or maybe someone from a foreign land meets your characters?

What kinds of strange customs might they have? What things would they do? And will their peculiarity breed conflict or friendship?

Foreign magics have been known to work under bizarre conditions, and traditions stranger still. You have everything you need to grow your worlds this week and inject some worldbuilding into what is already an excellent serial.

We start at 5pm GMT and provide live feedback!

Last Week: Entrenched

#Rules & How to Participate Please read and follow all the rules listed below. This feature has requirements for amparticipation!

 • Submit a story inspired by the weekly theme, written by you and set in your self-established universe that is 500 - 1000 words. No fanfics and no content created or altered by AI. (Use wordcounter.net to check your wordcount.) Stories should be posted as a top-level comment below. Please include a link to your chapter index or your last chapter at the end.

 • Your chapter must be submitted by Saturday at 2:00pm GMT.

You have until Saturday at 04:59am GMT to post your feedback.

 • On Saturdays at 5pm GMT, I host a Serial Sunday Campfire in our Discord’s Voice Lounge (every other week is now hosted by u/FyeNite).

The form is open on Saturdays from 5:30pm to 04:59am GMT.

#This Week’s Theme is Entrenched! This is a REQUIREMENT for participation. See rules about missing this requirement.**

Bonus Word List (each included word is worth 5 pts) - You must list which words you included at the end of your story (or write ‘none’).

 • Eager
 • Ego
 • Egg
 • A shoe is lost. - (Worth 10 points)

As bombs explode in no man's land and bullets whiz over our heads, the council of war meet to consider our options in the trenches, the tower casting its shadows upon us.

"Their army believes they are on the offense, that they will take our tower in the tangle sooner or later, and we will have to concede the point," our colonel says, pointing to the map. "I say let them. Let them believe in their little victory, and let us establish a good position to surround them, make them play defense."

He takes a swig from his canteen, before continuing. "They can believe in their victory all they want, but we will bring evidence to the contrary. And if they don't see reason, well... worse things have happened."

 • Somebody is overly dramatic. - (Worth 10 points)

Doom. It is onomatopoeia for the end of all things. Doom.

The last door to close, the lid of your coffin slammed shut. Doom. It is the sudden, shocking sound before the eternal silence. The final knell of the mortal bell that rings with the echoing tone of,

DOOM.

Doom is a mood. But everything ends, sooner or later.

What things will perish in your chapter this week? Will a delicious snack meet its doom in the belly of our protagonist? Or will a forlorn hope of romance be crushed?

Or perhaps an unexpected meteor will introduce your serial to the fate of the dinosaurs, after all.

Whatever the case, we look forward to reading whatever carnage you wreak upon your story this week.

 • A crime is committed, whether lawful or moral. - (Worth 10 points)

Across the battlefield, war cries echo over cracked stone and dented dirt. To the side, a family cries in grief over a life and livelihood reduced to ash and cinders. In the back lines, a general weeps tears of pride and joy for his men, who have performed their duty flawlessly. A stranded force sends a signal flare, crying for reinforcements that will never arrive, while wounded soldiers cry for their mothers.

A crying shame, isn't it?

[OT] Fun Trope Friday: Chemistry Does All & Camp Horror!

###Welcome to Fun Trope Friday, our feature that mashes up tropes and genres! How’s it work? Glad you asked. :)

 • Every week we will have a new spotlight trope.
 • Each week, there will be a new genre assigned to write a story about the trope.
 • You can then either use or subvert the trope in a 750-word max story or poem (unless otherwise specified).
 • To qualify for ranking, you will need to provide ONE actionable feedback. More are welcome of course!

Three winners will be selected each week based on votes, so remember to read your fellow authors’ works and DM me your votes for the top three.

Next up… IP Farewell paradoxes, we knew you perhaps a bit too well as you ran into the first week of May. For the last three weeks, we’ll focus on science. So get out your microscopes and mass spectrometers. Please note this theme is only loosely applied.

Trope: Chemistry Does All — It's amazing what you can do with a few chemicals in a science-fiction story. Mix a bit of Phlebotinum salt with a dash of suspension of disbelief, heat it to over 9000 degrees and you have yourself a "chemical substance" capable of whatever you want it to do.

Genre: Camp Horror — Camp is an aesthetic and sensibility that regards something as appealing or amusing because of its heightened level of artifice, affectation and exaggeration, especially when there is also a playful or ironic element. What happens when we add an erlenmeyer flaskful of horror to the mix? Let’s find out!

Skill / Constraint - optional: Someone sings a line or more from the song ‘Weird Science’ So, have at it. Lean into the trope heavily or spin it on its head. The choice is yours! Have a great idea for a future topic to discuss or just want to give feedback? FTF is a fun feature, so it’s all about what you want—so please let me know! Please share in the comments or DM me on Discord or Reddit!

Last Week’s Winners PLEASE remember to give feedback—this affects your ranking. PLEASE also remember to DM me your votes for the top five stories via Discord or Reddit—both katpoker666. This is a change from the top three of the past. In weeks where we get over 15 stories, we will do a top five ranking. Weeks with less than 15 stories will show only our top three winners. If you have any questions, please DM me as well. Some fabulous stories this week and great crit at the informal campfire and on the post! Winners will be revealed in next week’s FTF post along with the new set. So you’ll just have to wait and maybe enjoy some cheesy horror movies.

###Want to read your words aloud? Join the upcoming FTF Campfire The next FTF campfire will be Thursday, May 21st from 6-8pm ET. It will be in the Discord Main Voice Lounge. Click on the events tab and mark ‘Interested’ to be kept up to date. No signup or prep needed and you don’t have to have written anything! So join in the fun—and shenanigans! 😊

###Ground rules:

 • Stories must incorporate both the trope and the genre
 • Leave one story or poem between 100 and 750 words as a top-level comment unless otherwise specified. Use wordcounter.net to check your word count.

[Serial Sunday] I have A Bone to Pick With You!

#This Week’s Theme is Bone! This is a REQUIREMENT for participation. See rules about missing this requirement.**

Image

Bonus Word List (each included word is worth 5 pts) - You must list which words you included at the end of your story (or write ‘none’).

 • Bay
 • Borne
 • Brave
 • A bone is broken, whether living or dead. - (Worth 10 points)

Let’s get cracking! You have to give your characters something. Throw them a… concession, or there will be a subject of contention between you—a real… grievance to pick. You may be out of ideas, dry as a… as a dry thing, but if you really study hard, you won’t end pulling a real dumb-head move. That would compound your mistake, and fracture the whole plot, leaving your characters out there alone, chilled to the… core. So work your fingers to the… to the nubs. You know it’s the right thing to do—you can feel it in your… uh, your gut.

We start at 5pm GMT and provide live feedback!

###Theme Schedule: This is the theme schedule for the next month! These are provided so that you can plan ahead, but you may not begin writing for a given theme until that week’s post goes live.

 • May 10 - Bone

 • May 17 - Cry

 • May 24 - Doom

 • May 31- Entrenched

 • May 31- Foreign

#Rules & How to Participate Please read and follow all the rules listed below. This feature has requirements for amparticipation!

 • Submit a story inspired by the weekly theme, written by you and set in your self-established universe that is 500 - 1000 words. No fanfics and no content created or altered by AI. (Use wordcounter.net to check your wordcount.) Stories should be posted as a top-level comment below. Please include a link to your chapter index or your last chapter at the end.

 • Your chapter must be submitted by Saturday at 2:00pm GMT.

You have until Saturday at 04:59am GMT to post your feedback.

 • On Saturdays at 5pm GMT, I host a Serial Sunday Campfire in our Discord’s Voice Lounge (every other week is now hosted by u/FyeNite).

The form is open on Saturdays from 5:30pm to 04:59am GMT.

#This Week’s Theme is Antagonise! This is a REQUIREMENT for participation. See rules about missing this requirement.**

Bonus Word List (each included word is worth 5 pts) - You must list which words you included at the end of your story (or write ‘none’).

 • Argue
 • Acrid
 • Ailment
 • A fear is faced in some way. It does not have to be an old fear, or even conquered completely. Just merely triumphed once. - (Worth 10 points)

Another week, another theme. And what are you gonna do about it? No ideas, hey? Typical. Why don’t you try picking some words out of a hat?

Feeling antagonised yet? Relax, it was just an example! Instead, let’s think about who is antagonising who in your story. Are your heroes stirring things up among the rich and powerful? Or will we glimpse their enemies moving in the shadows? Antagonising one’s foes can force them to act in predictable ways, or force them into foolish errors. But sometimes, it can be a mistake on the antagonist’s part: causing a brutal backlash that can exceed all expectations.

One thing is for sure, this week’s theme is bound to cause some sparks to fly!
