MELAS

I found out this disease exists recently unfortunately because of a family autopsy. It’s apparently passed down from your mom, exact numbers unknown, maybe 1/10,000 people have it. Waiting for official confirmation however my mom is in a carehome with long-term symptoms which means I would also likely have it. It explains some of my weird health issues for sure

Anyway, there’s not a ton of information on the internet so any resources would be appreciated

I am early forties and have some health issues recently but was healthy into my late thirties. My mom only started having symptoms in her late 50s

In shock, any advice appreciated

My mom is in a home with bad stroke like symptoms and no one can figure out what’s wrong with her. Recently her sister died and autopsy shows MELAS. Apparently it’s rare but sometimes it can be adult onset? I never heard of this condition until an hour ago so any advice appreciated

I am 41 with memory issues and physical challenges, no energy. I thought it was long-haul covid but now im second guessing. Ill talk to my doctor but my mom and aunt are basically twins so no chance of infidelity in that tree sadly. Looks like 100% transmission from mom to kids so I have it. If i had kids they’d be fine but no plans for kids anyway

I feel glad to know the information and some people don’t have bad symptoms. But my mom is very mentally gone and so was her sister so I don’t like my chances and want to prepare for future so thanks for any suggestions

I just found out I have a rare genetic disorder

My mom is in a home with dementia like symptoms but it’s been decades and no one can figure out what’s up.

Her sister recently died after having similar symptoms and autopsy confirmed this week a genetic disorder called MELAS.

Anyway, my mom and her sister are basically twins so unfortunately no chance of infidelity there and it’s 100% transmission from your mother. So I have it but if I had kids they wouldn’t get it but I have no plans for kids anyway

Anyway I have what was diagnosed as long haul covid for a few years now and I am now realizing that it’s probably actually this genetic disorder fucking all my shit up. I am ~40 and realizing currently that my life will be almost certainly incapacitated in a nursing home. I already am having memory issues and life is fucked. That’s all. Hope you have a better day than I am having
