How to know an old 90’s civic is past saving?

To clarify, I live in the south so rust can happen but is nowhere near as much of a problem up north but how would I know a civic is past the point of spending the 3-5k?

From what I hear, anything can be replaced just about on old civics except the frame itself. Right now I need a Daily that can get me around and I’m willing to do minor to moderate work myself but it’s hard for me to figure out through Facebook listings, which civics are done for.

What should I look for when buying a manual Honda civic ex or dx that’s anywhere from 2-5k?

For even more clarification I mean the civics for sale with mismatch body panels and questionable interior modifications or damage. I see a lot of interior door panels missing and people don’t replace them so I’m not sure if the part is expensive or the owners are cheap and lazy.

Also should engine swaps to similar engines but different platforms steer me away?
