What is this blue thing that you get as a reward? I am not keen on giving Isaac FIVE quality gemstones that I normally use for jewelry if the reward isn't nice!

Question about wind screens in Grand Bazaar

I'm getting bored of producing and setting up wind screens in Grand Bazaar. Whenever there's a storm or blizzard, they obviously disappear again. Is it a must to have wind screens around my field and bee hive? What happens if I don't have wind screens around? Do my crops die or disappear when there's a storm or blizzard?
