How can I develop a stronger writing voice?

During my MA, my dissertation supervisor told me that my writing is too soft and polite. I'd describe it as simple and direct, not academic, no jargon.I do think it's lacking the critical edge for fashion journalism and criticism.

Is there a way I can polish my writing to make it sound more confident and compelling? Any reading exercises or habits that make a difference? If you have any advice please let me know, thank you.

I keep getting rejected 😭

Hi everyone, I'm looking for some guidance and would really appreciate hearing from anyone who's navigated the PhD application process in art history.

I've applied to two funded positions and received a rejection from my most recent application. My MA supervisors have been supportive and encouraged me to apply, which has meant a lot, but I'm genuinely trying to understand what makes a successful proposal, because I'm finding it difficult to identify what's missing from mine.

I have an MA in Fashion History from the UK (BFA in Art History). My research interest is in the visual and material culture of North Indian goddess traditions; ritual dress, iconography, procession. On the other hand a few PhD positions I applied to were already topic specificied but at the same time very aligned to my own research interests. I was rejected from those as well.

If anyone has been through multiple application cycles or has advice on developing a successful proposal, I'd be really grateful for a conversation. Thank you.
