Is this white or red oak? Stain or varnish/lacquer? And what to do about it?
I have a beautiful Canadel oak dining set (table, bench, and chairs) that no longer matches our decor. Pictures are of the dark top and somewhat natural underside. After deciding that building the table from the ground up is beyond my current skill set, my tentative plan is to refinish the table to match our decor. Ideally I’d end up with something that looks more natural…like oak with no specific “tint.” I planned to pay to have the seats reupholstered. I initially planned to use a chemical stripper to remove the old finish, but it sounds like that’s not a great option if this is stain. I could sand instead if need be. Or I could just buy a new table and sell this one too…but I’d prefer to refinish this if it’s feasible. Any advice?
