New course this fall (CS 7385: Human Factors) - No prereqs; Build a portfolio designing tech people actually want to use! Register by August 23, 2026.

Hey all - flagging a new course running Fall 2026:

CS 7385: Human Factors - Learn more here

It's focused on human-computer interaction - basically the why behind why some apps feel intuitive and others make you want to throw your laptop. You'll dig into how people actually perceive, think, and behave, and how to design tech around that instead of fighting it.

A few reasons it might be worth a slot in your schedule:

  • No prerequisites - and students from other majors are genuinely encouraged to join. Good design comes from a mix of perspectives, so the more varied the backgrounds in the room, the better. Psych, design, business, English, engineering, whatever your thing is - your viewpoint actually makes the work stronger here.
  • You build a portfolio, not just a transcript. Two full design-lifecycle projects in domains you choose - VR/AR, healthcare, accessibility, dance tech, and more.
  • No textbook to buy. Everything's free: foundational papers, current research, and classics like Don Norman's The Design of Everyday Things.
  • Learn by doing. Hands-on prototyping workshops, brainstorming sessions, peer critique, and real needfinding with actual users.
  • Skills that travel. UX design, user research, and evaluation methods - useful whether you head into industry or research.
