Pork neckbones, not smoked, in the deep freezer for 5 years. What's the black stuff and is it safe?
They're cooking now, but they looked just like this when raw. Pulling it off like in the third pic, it's plasticky and elastic. My wife asked me to make sure it's safe to eat, I was thinking it's blood congealed in vessels and maybe marrow. She was pretty sure it's fine but concerned since it was in a black Styrofoam tray.
Could you folks reassure us if it's safe and explain what it is so we know next time? (the deep freezer is at least 10 years deep.)
Thanks in advance.
