They're well within date, but the packet seems slightly puffed. I can't see any condensation and they smell fine. I'm not sure if this is a sign of spoilage or just an over inflated package? Very nervous because prawns.

ordered this poke bowl, but the raw tuna smelled and tasted a little fishy

hello, i’m asking and i’m concerned because due to health issues i need to be especially careful about food. today i got this poke bowl from a place that makes incredibly delicious bowls, and this time it was delicious too, aside from the tuna.

salmon was totally fine, but the tuna was slightly more fishy than usual. i did not swallow it and spit it out, discarded all the rest of the tuna as well just to be safe.

however, i still ate around it, and i’m wondering if the food all around is safe even if it touched the suspicious tuna?

i would also love to know opinions about whether or not the tuna looks harmful or sounds harmful in general. thank you so much

Powdered peanut butter stored in heatwave?

Sorry, this is gonna sound stupid, but food anxiety is bad lately.

I have a couple of tubs of defatted powdered peanut butter in my bedroom. One is opened, two are still sealed. We've had several weeks of heatwaves here, 37°C to 34°C most days. My house doesn't have air-conditioning, but I've mostly kept the curtains closed. I have no idea what temperatures my room actually reaches. I didn't leave it by the window.

Is this going to make the powdered peanut butter unsafe? The opened one is in a tub, lid screwed on, and placed inside a zip lock bag.

Thank you for your help. Sorry for asking dumb questions, its the anxiety giving me brain worms.

Boiled Lentils

I boiled green lentils on July 1th, today is July 6th. The lentils have been refrigerated in a container after cooking. The container is very cheap and probably doesn’t seal very much. I read that lentils can be kept refrigerated 3 to 5 days. Is 6 okay?

Sorry if it is a stupid question, please be kind I have an irrational fear of food p0isoning.

What are these holes and is it safe to eat?

It does not usually look like this. Beef bresaola, normally very solid.

Pre-packaged shrimp ravioli with lobster sauce - expired 5/6/26

How risky is it to eat this? I know the expiration date has longgg past, but I hate to waste the food (and money). It has been in the refrigerator the entire time.

The picture shows the ingredients, expiration date, and brand (in case that’s relevant).

Edit to add I’m in the United States and purchased at Costco.

3-day old takeaway pasta okay to eat??

I just ate some pasta with meat sauce that was in the fridge in a white takeaway container. It smelled, looked, and tasted fine. But then my brother informed me that it had been in the fridge since Wednesday night. It is now Sunday afternoon. Am I gonna be okay??

What dubious food safety practices have you observed from family or friends?

Friend 1- we bought two rotisserie chickens and ate some day 1. We refrigerated the remaining 1.5 chickens. Two days later we packed the remaining chicken in a cooler. It went from the cooler to iffy hotel fridges back to a cooler for two more days. At this point the chicken is 4-5 days old and has not been kept consistently cold. I told her that I wasn’t eating it anymore and she thought I was nuts and finished it 2 days later after arriving home from a 4 day drive.

Friend 2- bought a knife set at Walmart. Took the carving knife out of the blister pack and immediately went to cutting cheese for a cheese tray without even wiping off the “potential” oil/metal shavings not to mention any bacteria or whatever from the manufacturing process. We were in her kitchen so the sink was right there.

Is this pickle brine from 2020 still safe to use?

As an experiment, my uncle and I opened a sealed jar of pickles yesterday from 2020. The pickles were too soft (with the tiniest crunch), but the brine tastes incredible. Can I still use it for marinades, dips, etc? I also thought about adding it to an existing jar of pickles. If I keep it in the fridge, how long will it last?

I don’t see any unusual mold and I feel fine almost 24 hours after trying it.

Black pieces in canned mushrooms - Are these safe to eat?

Hello,

I opened a can of mushrooms. I am wondering if anyone can tell me what these black parts are and if it is safe to eat the rest of the mushrooms in the same can.

Additional info: this has been stored at room temp, freshly opened can of mushrooms.

Thank you!

Overcrowded freezer

Hey gang,

I made 12 days worth of meal prep for my dog last night and put 9 of those in the freezer. It's cooked beef, rice and carrots, pureed. The freezer only had a few bits inside and the 9 containers (around 500ml silicone boxes each) went in at room temp after cooling on the counter for around 2h. It was chock full but the door seemed to close okay.

This morning, around 11h after freezing, I took out an ice cube tray I had put in at the same time and it was partly liquid. Frozen on top and water below. I checked the food and it's slushy, not solid.

My dog has a sensitive stomach and recurring liver problems, so I usually err on the side of caution. At the same time, it's 9 days worth of food that took me a total of 7h to make staying up until 2.30am, so I don't want to be overly cautious if it's not necessary. But my effort and frustration don't cancel out potential bacterial growth.

I'm wondering if the overcrowding led to the freezer being less efficient and thus risking the food sitting at an unsafe temperature for an indeterminable amount of time.

Toss or keep? Thoughts?

Can tomatoes still be used in cooking when it goes bad and grows whitish molds on it?

So this is a bit silly, when a tomato goes bad and a white ish mold groes on it, my parrents takes out the bad part, and put it in trash. While the other good part, as per what my mom said, she sniff the good part, if there wasnt a bad smell, then she use it in cooking...

And we are just on the verge of a great dispute, as im trying to convince them that the whole tomatoe should be thrown away... but they wouldnt listen...

So i have desided to ask here, and see if what they are doing could lead to some health issues or not? As i know some kinds of fungus can lead to cancer, or could lead to other health issues...

So what do you guys think?

Weird question about safety of foods in general

How safe is it to eat at places like fast food restaurants. I'm immunocompromised but really love subway. Just been avoiding it because you know deli meat and leafy greens are meant to be like avoided during pregnancy and old age due to listeria and ecoli risk. How unsafe is it really to eat deli meat? Would getting it toasted help? It seem whenever there's a recall at my supermarkets it's a pre packed sandwich with salad in it. Or salad leaves. Why is that? And where is the safest place to purchase said foods? A farm?

Orange/Yellow grains in white rice

I keep finding these small orange/yellow grains in the white rice bag i opened just a few days ago… Been eating rice for forever and never seen this. Im living in a RV trailer for the summer and the bag has been simply put on the ground so admittedly not the most sanitary place (but didnt have other options…).

Are these bugs? Bug eaten grain? Or are they simply a mix up of another type of rice? I also saw it might be a fungi? Any pointers would be appreciated

Blue discoloration on beef fat/membrane, does anyone know what this is?

Hi everyone,

I bought this piece of beef from a local market today, and I noticed that part of the white membrane/fat has a bright blue discoloration. The rest of the meat looks and smells normal.
Has anyone seen this before? Could it be inspection dye, a processing mark, or something else? I was also wondering if there’s any chance it could be contamination (I even thought about rodent poison, although that seems unlikely).
Would you consider this safe to eat, or would you return it?
I’ve attached a photo. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!
