Newer DM going to start a game with a friend that wants to get into it and his 5 year old son. Any recommendations for simplifying the game for kids?

I ran a campaign for a year in college which kind of devolved into jumping from combat to combat without much role playing in between and I don't want to go down that route again. I hope this is the beginning of a long term thing and I want to make sure his son has a good time so I am seeking any advise you may have that was successful for younger players while still engaging adults.
