Book 2 Vaatu/Unalaq/Spirit world question

Rewatching Korra, currently at Book 2: a new spiritual age. I have a quick question, how come all the spirits are exceedingly anti Avatar when the Avatar, as shown two episodes prior, is the light spirit and the soul of a human combined? Wouldn’t that energy make spirits trust the avatar instinctively?

In this episode, Korra stumbles into a residential spirit community, and they all know (or more so think) that Unalaq opened the spirit portal, wouldn’t they question why a human would want to open the spirit portal that’s right next to the chaos destroying spirit?

Like I can’t really wrap my head around the fact that between light and darkness, spirits literally decided to throw their lot in with Vaatu, KNOWING, that his very presence causes them to lose their individuality and personality. C
