My current car (2016 Toyota Yaris Hatchback) needs 3k worth of work done to pass emissions because it apparently has a special gas tank that is rare to find. Since this is the third repair in as many years and I will soon have a child to drive around, I am looking to get a new daily driver with modern safety features.

I am hoping to keep the price around 20k and reliable. I do not know much about car brands (EX: I thought toyotas were easy to repair and maintain due to interchangeable parts but I was apparently wrong) and was hoping someone here would have some new or used suggestions I can research. I am currently located in the United States.
