Can you do a 529 without Child's SN? Downsides?
My mother-in-law is asking for my child's SN so she can open a 529 for him. We're estranged for many reasons and went no contact 3 years ago. I feel uncomfortable giving her my child's sn, does she really need it? Are there downsides that I'm not seeing? I honestly feel like this is an emotional/financial manipulation tactic, but I'm worried my emotions may be clouding my judgement. I'm also worried she may be thinking of doing it for her or our state (neither are particularly great per our financial advisor). Are there better options?
Edit to ask: If a trusted grandparent opened one, and she put money in that one, could there be ramifications for the trusted grandparent?
