Hey everyone 👋,
I'm looking for some advice on my QNAP setup. My main goal is to have ample storage for media (Jellyfin), photos and videos for multiple users, iPhone backups, and Mac Time Machine backups. I've got an older 4x4TB QNAP NAS model and I'm currently leaning towards a RAID 5 setup. For remote access, I'm already using Tailscale for other services on my home server and network.
My main questions are:
RAID Configuration for My Use Case:
What are your thoughts on RAID 5 for a 4x4TB setup, considering my needs for Jellyfin, multi-user photo/video storage, and backups? Is it a good balance of capacity and redundancy, or should I consider something else to ensure I have enough space and data protection?
Operating System:
Should I stick with the stock QNAP OS, or is it possible (and recommended) to change it to something else that might be better suited for my uses (especially Jellyfin and multi-user backups)? If so, what are the alternatives and what are the pros/cons?
General Advice:
Is there anything else I need to take into account for this setup, especially regarding long-term storage, data integrity, performance (especially for Jellyfin streaming), and optimizing for multiple users and backup solutions like Time Machine? Any tips or tricks are welcome!
Thanks in advance for your insights!
