Kevin Barry Artt
He was part of the 1983 escape but always professed his innocence for the killing he was convicted for and for being in the IRA ever. I know no one admitted being in the IRA as such but few went to any lengths to deny it after being convicted. Why was he chosen to be part of the elite IRA group who were handpicked for the escape even if he was on that wing ? I read Volunteers who were frontline combatants were prioritised. Was he in for a hard time because his conviction was for killing or Deputy Prison Governor and the IRA took pity on him or was he a Volunteer and denial / professing innocence was the best way to avoid extradition ? He was just a few weeks into his life sentence.
