I felt in love with swimming like potatoe

So I am 29M swimming since this February, I took 20 lessons with personal coach, I swim 3x per week.

I wanna be try-athlete so I also started (and finished) couch to 5k run program two months ago, and I improved so much faster in running then in swimming! So I realized I want a program for swimming too. I found about From 0 to 1650 program.

I have started today, I ditched any effort to focus on my technique and just swam, tried to relax, and it was first time in months I had a good time in pool! No fins, no snorchel, no pull buoy, no high elbow, no one eye in water and I was barely even kicking!

I even outswim depression for 2 hours! I felt so much better then when I focused on the technique and drills!

My only negative emotion is that I will have to swim 200m next week and it took me 8 months to get from 5m to 100m Front crawl. But hey, I can swith to breaststroke or lay on my back and just kick.

Do you guys have a similiar expiriences?

Kvadriceps cramps while swimming breaststroke

Hello,

I am 29M beginer, I swim 3x per week (Mon, Wednes., Saturday) for 6 months, I had like 20 lessons with personal coach. I also walk/run 3x per week (Tuesday, Thurstday, Sunday) for 30 minutes for 1 month.

On Saturday morning, after my rest day, I had my breakfast, wait for 2 hours and swam 100m BS, 12x50m Front Crawl with fins, 4x50m just Front Crawl and attempted 100m BS, but I couldn't finish even first length, due to little cramp in my kvads.

On monday afternoon, I did 100m BS as warmup, then 4x50m FC kickdrill, alternating with 4x50m "hands only" FC drill. I attempted another 100m BS, but I almost got a cramp in the middle of the second length, so I finished with FC. I did 4x50 FC with snorchel and 4x50 FC with no aids and I was completely fine.

I drink electrolytic drink during my training and I am taking magnesium pills.

Do you have any idea how to avoid those cramps?

When I asked my coach about those, she told me it is completely normal, to take magnesium and eat a banana before training session. But on saturday I had eggs&bread, around 600kcal and I still got those cramps.

Any expiriences with buying a swimming programme?

Have you ever bough an online swimming course? Did it help?

I don't want to work with my couch anymore (I think she is too chaotic for me) and I want more structure in my training, so I am considering this bundle offer: https://enduranceid.com/beginner-swim-course#course-check-out
I swim for 6 months, but I still struggle with basics. I learn pretty slow, and I am generally anxious. I am afraid of water, afraid of people...

My fitness goals are:

  1. to swim Front Crawl 400m without stopping
  2. to run 5k without stopping (I am doing cauch to 5k program).
I swim Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and I run Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday

My main issues are:

  1. Not having another pair of eyes watching me to perform the drills correctly.
  2. Price, in my country (Czechia) I pay around 160 dollars per month (4 sessions). But new swimming club I have my eyes on are even more expensive (300 dollars per 5 sessions). The bundle costs 170 dollars, it's like 10% of my salary.

I tried to look up some swimming training online for free, but I guess the good know-how is never for free.

Sorry for the long post. Don't be afraid to ask, if anything doesn't make sense, my english kinda sucks.

Should I stop swimming breaststroke?

I have started 5 months ago, learning breaststroke (BS) and front crawl (FC) with personal coach. I swim 3x per week for 1 hour, once with a coach, 600-1000m. I try to put more emphasis on FC, (doing something like 4x50m FC and 100m BS, or 200m FC kick drill and 100m BS kickdrill). I have started couch to 5k running programme a week ago (I run 3x per week).

I wanna start training for triatlon, should I stop swimming BS and focus on FC only? I will still use it as a warm up (100-200m). I am kinda afraid of how my coach will react, when I tell her, I want to stop learning BS and focus on FC. Also learning FC and BS was my idea, not her.

How often do you try the whole thing?

Today I was bored at work, so I daydreamed about training for triathlon. The issue is I can only swim 50m FC and I cannot really run for longer then 2 minutes. So I thought I would swim 3x per week, run 2x per week and doing swimming, cycling and running together the last day, using fitness equipment at my swimming pool. Training 6x per week in total.

After coming home I googled some training splits and I found out, nobody is suggesting training the whole thing every week. But it seems weird to me, to not try it before the race. So I wanna ask, how often do you try doing everything in one day?

And yes, I am new to endurance sports, I started swimming at February. Before I trained for muscle hypertrophy at gym. I am sorry, if it is too dumb question.

Some questions from begginer swimmer

Hello everyone,
I hope people don't mind posting me here as a beginner, with some questions. I just don't have enough karma to post at r/Swimming

I am 29 years old male. I have always been a slow learner, especially with any kinds of movements. And I have trouble staying concetrated.

I have started swimming at February, before lessons I knew only basic breaststroke with my head above water and I could swim only 25m. Now I know I can comfortably swim 400m with breaststroke but only 25-50m with front crawl, I have trouble breathing. And I have learned how to float on my back, just kicking. I am swimming 2-3 times per week, once is a 1 on 1 session with my coach.

Now the questions:

  1. I have bought kickboard and pull buoy, but I feel too shy to use them, if I am not with my trainer. Almost nobody at pools I am visiting is not using them (most people in my country are swimming just basic breaststroke, or they are standing there). Should I try to overcome the emotions or can I improve my technique without it? And how can I overcome it?

  2. If my coach points out many mistakes I have at my technique, which ones I should try to get rid of first?
Some mistakes I can think of:

Breaststroke:
- not flexing my ankles during the kick. I start to kick with the flex at the ankles, but I am not holding it.
- my hands go too far back
- my hands are getting too deep in the water
- I am raising my head (neck movement), not only my chest, when I am breathing ( I almost cannot inhale without it).

Front Crawl:
- rotating my head instead of just body, or rotating my head when I should be rotating just my body
- legs sinking
- bad recovery (not pointing my hand down during recovery)
- raising my head too much
- not bending my elbow enough, during catch

  1. Why might be recovery during Front Crawl so important, that I had to swim so many lenghts with focus just on it? Is it because the shoulder issues, lot of people swimming FC have?

  2. How should I structurize my solo sessions? I am just alternating those two strokes every 100m to 200m and trying to focus on technique.

  3. Isn't 1 on 1 session with a coach every week a overkill? Since I am improving so slowly.

  4. How do you tell, if it's time to change a coach? Some exercises feel like a waste of time (like sculling or swimming several lenghts with just kicking and recovering my hand over and over and over.)

  5. My pull buoy is kinda big, can I use it instead of kicking board?

This is longer then I expected, if you get to the end, thank you!
