Customizability vs rigidity on not-in-person ordering

I’ve been aware of this for quite a while, as it affects where I order and why. I don’t understand why some companies are pretty cool with a fairly large customization ability as simple substitutions w/o additional cost, some allow *some* customization, and some basically allow none. Some places ‘wall off’ certain categories. Not make it a choice if you’re willing to pay, but just ‘you can’t order that with this just because…’

This isn’t the only example, but it came up again today. My go-to FF breakfast of choice is a bacon egg & cheese biscuit meal at McD’s. But I cannot get the flavored iced coffee as part of the combo. Not that it’s additional cost, you simply *cannot* order it in a combo at all. So if I want that breakfast at McD’s I literally *must* order everything separately. Way more expensively than it should be. And of course it’s only until 10:30 am.

Jack-Box serves breakfast all day and allows for beaucoup exchanges and customizations. Sometimes there’s an upcharge, but it’s *offered*. No fuss, no muss. Much wider variety in their menu too of course. They’re not entirely immune, though. Order a single egg roll and get a single sweet & sour cup. Order three egg rolls and get two sweet & sours but there is no way, for love nor money, to get three of them, i.e. one per egg roll.

I will always prefer the McD’s breakfast biscuit, but will be ordering my breakfasts from Jack going forward because - all day, customization, and *availability*. And then there’s the fact that Jack’s hash browns are larger and crisper and even I think cheaper than McD’s, and I just did the ‘put the hash browns *in* the sandwich’ hack, and - game over.

Again, these are just two examples, there are several FF places that are pretty much no options at all. Or the combos come with fries, but no matter what you cannot order the combo with rings even with an upcharge. Stuff that isn’t logical and doesn’t make sense because it really doesn’t affect them financially and could even get them *more* income if they allowed it. Cutting off their noses to spite their bottom line. Also, there can be pretty major differences between ordering from the company’s app, DD or UE - they may all offer different options, and nobody seems to care.

I had a Mary moment just now

I was watching a video clip of..someone I enjoy watching as personal eye candy. Just an ordinary person in the scheme of things. Known but not greatly famous, or recognizable by the average person. They had sleeves rolled up on a shirt I liked, and I realized I was staring at the hairs on those forearms, and my reaction was..same, girl🤣.

…about Alison Steadman’s deliberately annoying portrayal of Mrs Bennet, but both Steadman and 1995’s director Simon Langston understood how to toe up to the mark *without going whole-hog OTT*. Her Mrs B was never deliberately evil or calculatingly nasty. The writers and director of TOBS decided to write her as 100% hateful and nasty with NO redeeming qualities. She’s a total rotten b*tch, and Ruth Jones does more than lean in to OTT, she demolishes it like a gleeful demon from Good Omens. It’s actually cringe as in I’m embarrassed for her even if she isn’t for herself. As much as people love the outcome of the series and most of the cast, the overwhelming reason *not* to watch or to enjoy the series is specifically stated by most to be because of her portrayal. She almost ruins it for many and does ruin it for nearly as many. I don’t think ‘she was the reason I didn’t/couldn’t watch’ looks good on an acting CV.
