All the books I read in May

All the books I read in May

Hellooo, I had a really nice reading month after a long while this May so I thought I'd talk about what I read with y'all and get to know what others in the city are reading.

Comfort Me With Apples - 3⭐ This is a fantasy novella of Bluebeard retelling, gave me Don't Worry Darling film vibes. It was a short book that I'd been wanting to read for a long while. It was interesting enough to continue reading, but did not leave me with any strong impression once I was done, so 3 stars.

Writers & Lovers - 5⭐ I read this as part of a private book club and my godd, it was so good. I finished the book filled with joy, and hope and happiness. The story revolves around a character in her early 30s who is really going through a shitty few years of her life - struggling with her mom's death, the loans she's drowning in, the dating heartbreak she's going through etc., while also trying to manage everyday life and balance her passion for writing. The character is going through a bleak time of her life, but the writing felt so light and the character herself was such a smart, witty and grounded character - everything about her just felt so real. My first 5 star read of the year, absolute banger.

And Now, Back To You - 3⭐ So, I read the first book in this series First Time Caller last year, which is an amazing 5 star romance featuring well fleshed out characters that had me smiling while reading, believing in magic and love and all. In relation to that, this sequel featuring different characters from the same universe - was interesting, but nothing great. It made me smile at times, but mostly it was just engrossing enough to read.

An Advertisement for Toothpaste is just a small 50 page book featuring 4 short story accounts of things that happen in Polish villages. I didn't much care for this book.

The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi - 4⭐ I read this one as part of Readucks Book Club, the book club running through the discord meetup community I'm a part of. The story is about a badass retired Muslim pirate woman who comes back from retirement for one final adventure. This is such a beginner friendly book, everyone read through this book like a breeze - it was quite funny and entertaining - If you're new to reading fiction or want to gift your niece/nephews anything, this is a solid choice in my opinion.

Dislocations - 3⭐ So, this is also just a 90 page book about this woman documenting her friend's rapidly deteriorating memory. It is written in small small chapters and the author tells how as her friend forgets things, the author is also losing the specific type of language and understanding she has with her friend, how it feels like the friendship itself is drifting away even when you're constantly present in their life. Pretty great as par as message goes, but I did not get too moved by it and all, so it's just a 3 star.

I'm a Fan - 2⭐ read, honestly nothing much to say about it - it's a story about a woman who's obsessed with the kinda toxic unattached man she's having an affair with and one of his exes oda social media presence. Very underwhelming, I didn't much care for this book.

Anyways, that's me. What did you get upto last month, do you have any favorites you'd recommend to me? Do any of these books that I mentioned pique your interest? Let me know! ^-^

Our chennai book club has been running for a year now, join us!

hellooo, we random ah started our Readucks fiction book club last year and its been a year of interesting books and fun discussions. this month we're reading a book about a muslim pirate woman coming back from retirement for one last adventure across the ocean.

we get to discover some fun books we might not normally read, and also get to critically analyze books thanks to all the differing opinions from everyone. we're also hoping to start a nonfiction chapter where we maybe read under a specific theme and meet to discuss once in two months or something. and maybe even a film discussion club eventually? (we're a meetup community that's been running for 4~ years now, we do a lot of casual meetups, sports events, group trips etc., regularly).

If any of these sound interesting to you or you have an idea of your own, please come join us! I'll leave the discord invite in the replies!
