Really struggling with this gluten free thing
I have been gluten free since the start of 2025, and I’ve really struggled with the fact that so many comfort foods are now off-limits.
There’s a few reasons I’m struggling, but the main one is that I’m autistic and really particular about taste and texture- even when I could eat gluten I could always tell if a recipe changed for example, so this gluten free thing I really don’t think I’m cut out for- the textures are wrong, the tastes are wrong, and I’m sick of these fake foods and miss the real versions. I like savoury snacks like pasties, pies, sandwiches etc… whereas the fake versions are far too sweet for me. I don’t want to feel like I’m eating cake. The only sweet things I cared about were biscuits… but oops, can’t have those either.
Not only that but I have also been long-term struggling to find employment, and I had a family bereavement last year and food was the only bit of routine I had left… it’s had a lot of knock-on effects on my life in that I can’t just grab a quick convenient snack from a Costa when I’m out and about anymore…. So it’s had yet another routine change.
I’m tempted to go back to normal… there has been rare accidental consumption and not once have I ever had any additional side effects… so part of me wonders if I’ve been misdiagnosed. All my home comforts have been stripped away and I need control over my own life back.
I don’t even care if going back to gluten kills me- at least I’d regain control over my own life and die happy rather than live miserably.
