I too tried the Hoffman Americano method with:
steamed water (i know, but it works)
No crema (i know, but it works)
1:4 ratio for volume.
Let me tell you that this is no joke. It wasn't harsh in the least. It was balanced, bright and acidic, and still rich tasing but the texture/mouthfeel was on point. Add a few drops of milk or not, but it was a delicious beverage!
There is no way I'm going back to watering down espresso with hot water like a bloody neanderthal. Nay. This enlightened monkey requires steamed water now...
