Wanted to gauge here what others think about highly influential pieces of media, or stuff you heard lauded or talked about for a long time, that just don’t quite resonate with you upon actually viewing/playing.

For context, the work that brought this to my mind was having just watched the original Ghost in the Shell film. Before you get mad, I think it’s still a great movie, wonderful shot composition, great tone and entertaining plot. Additionally I can see the works it inspired as well, especially parts of Metal Gear, but with how influential it is to many other pieces of media I enjoy, I built it up in my mind as something more grandiose I guess. Still very good, but overall it doesn’t quite reach the narrative depth I had anticipated and that the works it inspired did much more for exploring it’s themes (though I will say due to certain constraints I did watch the English dub which possibly did not help).

Regardless the question is just, are there other personal examples of very influential media that upon finally consuming just didn’t hit like you had thought?
