[LotM V8]If Sherlock thinks, Gehrman acts, Dantès judges, and Merlin believes—what is left of Klein?
Sherlock, Gehrman, Dantès, and Merlin are treated as costumes Klein uses out of convenience. But they are not.
Sherlock takes away Klein’s ability to grieve and feel guilty, leaving only intelligence. Gehrman takes away the ability to be hindered by conscience, the part that would slow him down as a reaction to his violent nature. Dantès takes away the ability to see through the pretense and recognize that vengeance in the name of righteousness is simply vengeance. And perhaps the most frightening part is Merlin, which fools both himself and others into thinking that he actually holds the keys to wisdom.
He does not assume any of those personalities consciously. He sinks into them. The mask he needs to use in order to cope with a certain situation becomes more natural to him every time it is needed.
And the scary thing is that he is very good at being all four of them. It is getting easier for him to be the detached, ruthless person who thinks he has the answers.
By the end, which one is actually steering?
