Memorizing sentences instead of words to accelerate learning?

I watched a video recently by “Mikel Hyperpolyglot” where he says you should write down sentences you use in everyday speaking, then translate them into your target language and this way you're learning sentences you’ll actually use. Just wondering if this would be a good idea?

I’m interested in giving it a try but I worry about using something like Yandex for translations since I don’t want to come across as speaking like a robot. Also I’m worried about the many usual mistakes when translating English into Russian but alot of people in the comments are saying translation software has come a long way in the last few years.

Your thoughts? I’m probably somewhere between A1-A2, i have a decent understanding of cases but I’m literally useless when speaking to actual people in real life.
